Special tools and workshop equipment required

  • ◆ Hand vacuum pump V.A.G 1390

Requirements for test:

  • ● No leaks in vacuum lines and hose connections.
  • ● No obstructions in vacuum lines.

A34-0163

  • ‒ → Unscrew bolts -arrows- and remove engine cover panels -A...C-.

A24-0150
  • ‒ → Remove air duct -arrows-.

Checking for leaks

A26-0350
  • ‒ → Detach hose from secondary air pump motor and blow into hose lightly (do not use compressed air).
  • ◆ Both combination valves should be closed; it should not be possible to blow through the hose.

If it is possible to blow through the hose:

  • ‒ Disconnect connecting line between secondary air motor and combination valve from one of the combination valves and close connecting line by hand. Blow through the hose again.

If it is still possible to blow through the hose:

  • ‒ Renew the combination valve still fitted to the connecting line.

If it is not possible to blow through the hose:

  • ‒ Renew the combination valve detached from the connecting line.

Checking function

A26-0351
  • ‒ → Detach vacuum hose from the combination valve which is to be checked and connect vacuum pump V.A.G 1390 to combination valve.

A26-0350
  • ‒ → Disconnect hose from secondary air pump motor and blow into hose lightly (do not use compressed air).
  • ‒ Operate hand vacuum pump.
  • ◆ The relevant hand combination valve should open; it should now be possible to blow through the hose.

If the relevant combination valve does not open:

  • ‒ Renew combination valve.

If the relevant combination valve opens:

  • ‒ Repeat function check on the second combination valve.

Note:

  • ● Use special tool 3231 and Hazet carburettor spanner 4530 for removing and installing the left combination valve.
  • ● There is no special tool required for removing and installing the right-hand combination valve.
