Note:

When the engine control unit is disconnected the learned values are erased but the contents of the fault memory remain intact.

Special tools and workshop equipment required

• ◆ VAS 5051 and VAS 5051/1

or

• ◆ V.A.G 1551 and V.A.G 1551/3 A

Removing

• ‒ Connect the vehicle diagnostic, test and information system VAS 5051 (or fault reader V.A.G 1551). Select engine electronics control unit by entering address word "01" ; when doing this the ignition must be on.

• ‒ Always start by calling up and printing out the control unit identification => Page 01-6.

• ‒ Check the coding against the list of coding variants => Page 01-50.
• ‒ Switch off ignition.
• ‒ → Remove rubber seal from the front -arrow-.
• ‒ Remove plenum chamber cover -1- from the front.
• ‒ Remove cover for electronics box in plenum chamber.

• ‒ → Carefully lever off the retainer bar with a screwdriver -arrow-.
• ‒ Release catches and unplug control unit connectors.
• ‒ Take out engine control unit.

Installing

Install in reverse sequence; note the following points:

Important note:

After installing the new engine control unit the following operations must be performed:

• ‒ Interrogate and if necessary erase the fault memory => Page 01-9.
• ‒ Perform adaption of throttle valve control part -J338 => Page 24-138.
• ‒ Check the notes on coding new engine control units => Page 01-48.
• ‒ On vehicles with cruise control (identifiable by controls on steering column), activate the cruise control via the engine control unit.

=> Electrical system; Repair group 01; Self-diagnosis of cruise control system (CCS); Testing cruise control system (CCS)

• ‒ On models with an automatic gearbox, program the kick-down function .
• ‒ Perform adaption of immobilizer to engine control unit.

=> Electrical System; Repair Group 01; Self-diagnosis of electronic immobilizer; Adaptation procedure when engine control unit is replaced

• ‒ On models with engine code letters ANB, generate the readiness code => Page 01-58.
