Connecting fault reader V.A.G 1551 and selecting functions > < Motronic self-diagnosis
Motronic Injection and Ignition System (4 cyl.)
Motronic self-diagnosis
Technical data of self-diagnosis
  • ◆ Non-volatile memory
  • voltage supply independent

Data output:

  • ◆ Rapid data transfer

Functions:

  • ◆ Check control unit version
  • ◆ Interrogate fault memory
  • ◆ Final control diagnosis
  • ◆ Perform basic setting of engine
  • ◆ Read measured value block

Fitting locations of components

After evaluation of the data, the Motronic control unit differentiates between 46 different faults => Fault Table Page 01-11.

Notes:

  • ◆ The final control diagnosis can only be performed with the engine stopped and the ignition switched on.
  • ◆ However, interrogation of fault memory should be performed with the engine running, if possible.
  • ◆ The possibilities offered by the self-diagnosis can only be utilised with fault reader V.A.G 1551 or V.A.G 1552. In Repair Group 01, only mode 1 - Rapid data transfer - is described.

Notes on fault recognition and remedy

  • ◆ If a fault situation exists for longer than a specific period, the fault is stored as a static fault. If the fault is no longer present after a specified period, it becomes a sporadic fault. This process is constantly repeated. If the fault does not occur within the next 50 engine starts, this sporadic fault will be automatically deleted.
  • ◆ By disconnecting the plug from the Motronic control unit, the permanent positive power supply is also cut off and the learned values are thus deleted. This does not delete the fault memory.
  • ◆ If a fault recognised by the self-diagnosis is rectified, then carry out the following steps:
    • ‒ Delete fault memory.
    • ‒ Switch off engine and restart.
    • ‒ Carry out a test drive.
    • ‒ Perform automatic test sequence by entering address word 00.
