Special tools and workshop equipment required

  • ◆ 3287 Pressing-out tool

Or

  • ◆ 3287A Ball joint puller
  • ◆ V.A.G 1331 Torque wrench
  • ◆ V.A.G 1332 Torque wrench

Removing

 
V44-0400
  • ‒ Vehicle standing on its wheels over lifting platform
  • ‒ → Detach wheel trim. In the case of light alloy wheels, use puller from vehicle tool kit or suction grip -3208- to remove trim cap.
 
A42-0248
  • ‒ → Slacken off collared bolt -arrow- by 90° only so as not to damage wheel bearing.
Attention:
Vehicle must be standing on its wheels when slackening off and tightening collared bolt.
-Danger of accident-
  • ‒ Remove wheel.
  • ‒ Hand-tighten all 5 wheel bolts again.
  • ‒ Firmly apply handbrake.
  • ‒ Screw out collared bolt -arrow-.
 
A42-0045
  • ‒ Pull ABS speed sensor out of wheel bearing housing.
  • ‒ → Screw out bolt -arrow 2- for connecting link.
 
A42-0353
  • ‒ Unscrew nut of bolted track rod/steering arm joint of wheel bearing housing.
  • ‒ → Use pressing-out tool -3287- to press track rod off steering arm of wheel bearing housing.
  • ‒ Detach pressing-out tool -3287-.

Instead of pressing-out tool -3287-, use can also be made of ball joint puller -3287A-.

 
A42-0354
  • ‒ → Unscrew nut -1- from pin of track rod -2- until it is flush with thread of pin.
  • ‒ Apply ball joint puller -3287A- and press track rod off steering arm of wheel bearing housing.
  • ‒ Detach ball joint puller -3287A-.
  • ‒ Unscrew nut from pin of track rod.
  • ‒ Detach track rod from steering arm of wheel bearing housing.
  • ‒ Unscrew bolts from brake caliper housing.
 
A42-0044
  • ‒ Detach brake caliper and attach to body such that its weight cannot bend or damage brake hose/brake pipe.
  • ‒ Detach brake disc.
  • ‒ → Mark installation position of eccentric washer for bolt -arrow 2-.
  • ‒ Screw out bolt -arrow 2-.

 
A42-0045
  • ‒ → Remove wheel bearing housing/upper link bolted joint -arrow 1-.
  • ‒ Detach wheel bearing housing from drive shaft.

Installing

Install in reverse order.

For bolts and nuts to be replaced as well as tightening torques, refer to .

  • ‒ Attach wheel bearing housing to drive shaft.
  • ‒ Pre-tighten bolted joint for wheel bearing housing/lower link and shock absorber/lower link to 20 Nm.

Wheel bearing housing/upper link bolted joint must be secured with vehicle standing on its wheels.

Otherwise, bonded rubber bush would be subject to torsion and its service life shortened.

 
A42-0044
  • ‒ → Fit bolt -arrow 2- with eccentric washer in line with mark and secure.
  • ‒ Install brake caliper housing.

=> Brake System; Repair Group 46; Rear Brake C38; Servicing brake caliper

=> Brake System; Repair Group 46; Rear Brake C43; Servicing brake caliper

  • ‒ Attach track rod to steering arm of wheel bearing housing.
  • ‒ Fit connecting link.
  • ‒ Screw in new collared bolt and tighten to prescribed torque without additional turn => Page 42-111, Item 7.
  • ‒ Fit and secure wheel => Page 44-1.
  • ‒ Set vehicle down on its wheels.
  • ‒ Unfasten wheel bearing housing/upper link bolted joint.
  • ‒ Bounce vehicle several times.
  • ‒ Tighten wheel bearing housing/upper link bolted joint to prescribed torque.
  • ‒ Secure collared bolt with prescribed additional turn => Page 42-111, Item 7.
  • ‒ Perform wheel alignment => Page 44-13.
