Removing and installing brake pads
Removing and installing brake pads
Special tools and workshop equipment required
   
t  Torque wrench -V.A.G 1331-

t  Piston resetting appliance -T10145-
Removing
  Note
Mark brake pads when removing them if they are to be reinstalled. Reinstall in their original position to prevent uneven braking.
–  Remove wheels.

–  Secure brake disc with one wheel bolt.
  N46-0337
–  Unplug connector -1- for pad wear indicator.
–  Slightly lift up locating lug on lower part of connector -2- and turn 90°.
–  Pull lower half of connector out of bracket.

–  Knock out pad retaining pins -arrows-.

–  Take out retaining springs -arrows-.
Before pressing the piston back, draw off brake fluid from the reservoir with a bleeder bottle. Otherwise, fluid can overflow and cause damage, particularly if reservoir has been topped up.
–  Press pads off brake disc and then remove pads from caliper housing.
Installing
Before inserting new brake pads, press piston back into cylinder with resetting appliance. Before pressing the piston back, draw off brake fluid from the reservoir with a bleeder bottle. Otherwise, fluid can overflow and cause damage, particularly if reservoir has been topped up.
–  Press piston back.
–  Insert pads into brake caliper housing.
t  The brake pads are uni-directional; observe markings on damper plate.

–  Fit retaining springs -arrows-.
–  Press retaining springs down and knock pad retaining pins fully home.

–  Fit connector and wire -arrow- for pad wear indicator into bracket on brake caliper.
–  Attach connectors for pad wear indicator.
–  Fit wheels → Wheel/Tyre Guide.
  Note
t  After each brake pad change firmly depress brake pedal several times with vehicle stationary, so that the brake pads are properly seated in their normal operating position.
t  Check brake fluid level after changing brake pads.
