  • ◆ → Solar operation is only possible with sun roof closed or tilted (solar energy converted into electrical energy by solar roof is fed into vehicle electrical system by way of contacts -A- (at front edge of sun roof) and -B- (at sun roof frame).
  • ◆ Solar operation is not possible with ignition on and auxiliary heater/ventilation running (fresh-air blower control unit -J126 interrupts connection between solar panel and fresh-air blower -V2).

  • ◆ On vehicles with no solar panel, all heating system control motors remain in their instantaneous position when ignition is switched off. Ventilation of passenger compartment in solar mode does however require the fresh-air/recirculated-air flaps to be set to "fresh-air mode". On vehicles with solar roof, the encoding thus informs -E87 (heating) that the vehicle is fitted with solar cells. -E87 (heating) then sets the flaps in the heating system to "fresh-air mode" after switching off ignition.
  • ◆ The energy emitted by the solar cells -C20 is conveyed directly via the control unit -J126 to the fresh-air blower -V2. The fresh-air blower converts the electrical energy generated into blower power.
  • ◆ When the ignition is switched off (no signal detected by -E87 (heating)), the fresh-air blower control unit -J126 regularly interrogates the voltage at the input of the solar cells and utilises the voltage generated by the solar cells in such a manner that the fresh-air blower runs at maximum possible speed provided that sufficient solar energy is available.
  • ◆ The electrical energy emitted by the solar roof with a sunlight intensity of 500W/m2 is roughly 12W:

  • 500W/m2(sunlight intensity) x 0.21m2(sun roof solar surface) x 0.13 (solar cell efficiency -C20) x 0.9 (efficiency of fresh-air blower control unit -J126)
  • ◆ → Contacts -A- and -B- (at sun roof and sun roof frame) for transmitting the electrical energy generated must be clean and free from normal grease.
  • ◆ If necessary, contacts -A- and -B- can be coated with a small quantity of contact grease (electrically conductive preservative/lubricating agent available from electronics dealers).

Checking operation of solar roof

  • ‒ Move vehicle into the sun.

Note:

Given unfavourable weather conditions, solar roof can also be illuminated using two commercially available 500 W halogen lamps for example. A distance of 500 mm from the solar roof must be maintained.

  • ‒ Open "centre" dash panel vents and close other vents.
  • ‒ Switch off ignition (operating and display unit for air conditioner/Climatronic -E87 (heating) blank).
  • ‒ Close sun roof.

A current of air can be felt from the dash panel vents (check by moistening palm of hand if necessary).

If no current of air is felt:

  • ‒ Check encoding of -E87 (heating) for vehicle with solar panel =>Page 01-107.
  • ‒ Remove glove box.

  • ‒ → Unplug connector -A- from fresh-air blower control unit -J126.
  • ‒ Measure voltage between contact -6- and contact -3- at connector -A-.
    • ‒ Specification: 8....12 V DC (depending on sunlight intensity)
  • ‒ Connect up test lamp (12V, max. 5W) between contacts -6- and -3- at connector -A-.
  • ‒ Test lamp glows or lights (depending on sunlight intensity).

Notes:

  • ◆ If test lamp glows or lights, solar roof is operating properly. If fresh-air blower does not run, check freedom of movement of fresh-air blower -V2. If no fault is found, replace control unit -J126 and fresh-air blower -V2.
  • ◆ If test lamp does not glow or light, check wiring to both contacts at sun roof opening. Check solar panel if no fault is found.

  • ◆ On illuminating solar roof with halogen lamps, electrical energy emitted is only approx. 1.5 W (fresh-air blower rotates but current of air can hardly be felt).
