Renewing oil seal for flange shaft (rear) (Gearbox fitted in vehicle)

Special tools and workshop equipment required

t	Oil seal extractor lever -VW 681-

t	Mandrel -30 - 505-

t	Press tool -30 - 506 B-

Drip tray

Removing (Gearbox fitted in vehicle) –  Refer to general repair instructions → Chapter. –  Place drip tray underneath and drain gearbox oil. Vehicles with 4-cylinder engine:

–  Disconnect exhaust system at clamp -1- → Rep. Gr.26. Vehicles with 6-cylinder engine: –  Remove rear section of exhaust system behind clamps → Rep. Gr.26. Continued for all vehicles:

–  Remove heat shield for propshaft from cover for centre differential -arrows-. –  Unbolt propshaft from gearbox → Rep. Gr.39.

–  Unscrew speed nut -arrow- slightly and secure propshaft to stud with wire. –  Position drip tray under sealing cap.   Note

Oil flows out when sealing cap -B- is removed. –  Remove circlip -A-. –  Screw an M8 bolt into thread of sealing cap. –  Pull out sealing cap using bolt.

–  Bend open circlip and pull out flange shaft.

–  Pull out flange shaft oil seal using oil seal extractor -VW 681-. Installing –  Lightly oil outer circumference of oil seal.

–  Knock in new oil seal for flange shaft to a depth of 2 mm below surface of housing; keep seal straight when installing. –  Pack space between sealing lip and dust lip half-full with sealing grease -G 052 128 A1-. –  Install flange shaft.

–  When installing flange shaft, fit circlip at the same time. t  The circlip must be seated in the base of the groove. –  Install sealing cap with new O-ring and secure in place. –  Bolt propshaft to gearbox → Rep. Gr.39. –  Fill up oil in gearbox and check oil level → Chapter. –  Align exhaust system so it is free of stress → Rep. Gr.26. Tightening torques
