Renewing oil seal for final drive/gearbox housing
  Note
t  A defective oil seal will allow ATF or gear oil to escape into the torque converter bellhousing via the central breather in the oil seal (between the two sealing lips).
t  A damaged seal may also allow ATF to enter the differential. This then becomes overfilled and oil will escape at the differential breather.
Special tools and workshop equipment required

Procedure
–  Loosen bolt -arrow- securing drive shaft to wheel hub on both sides with vehicle standing on its wheels.
–  Remove front wheels.

–  Remove heat shield for drive shaft (right-side) -arrows-.
  Note
The third bolt is not shown in the illustration.
–  Unbolt drive shaft -1- (left and right) from flange shaft on gearbox → Rep. Gr.40.

–  Remove bolt for flange shaft -arrow- (counterhold flange shaft with drift).
–  Place used oil collection and extraction unit -V.A.G 1782- below gearbox.
–  Extract gear oil from final drive.
–  Pull out flange shaft (right-side).
–  Remove gearbox support (right-side) → Chapter.

–  Remove bolts -12 ... 1- securing cover for final drive, and take off cover.
–  Pull out differential and remove.

–  Remove tapered roller bearing outer race -1- for differential and shim -2- (behind outer race) from gearbox housing by hand.
  Note
Thickness of shim has been measured to fit; the shim must not be replaced with another shim of different thickness.
–  Remove flange shaft (left-side) → Chapter.

–  Pull out oil seal.
  Note
The oil seal extractor lever must be applied behind the two sealing lips of the oil seal. Do not position at outer circumference of oil seal as the contact surface in the gearbox housing could be damaged. Guide the lever carefully when removing the seal.

–  Examine oil seal seat in gearbox housing for damage; reface surface if necessary.
–  Lightly lubricate outer circumference and sealing lip of oil seal with ATF.
–  Slide oil seal onto drift -3383- with protruding sealing lip -arrow- on seal facing towards drift.

–  Drive in new oil seal as far as stop.

–  Insert shim -2- and tapered roller bearing outer race -1- for differential onto stop in gearbox housing by hand.

–  Renew O-ring -arrow-.
–  Install differential in gearbox housing.

–  Install cover for final drive.
–  Tighten bolts securing cover for final drive in two stages in the sequence shown:
1.  Tighten bolts -1 … 3- hand-tight.
2.  Tighten bolts -1 ... 12- to 23 Nm in the sequence indicated.
–  Install flange shaft (right-side).
The remaining installation steps are carried out in reverse sequence; note the following:
–  Install gearbox support → Chapter.
–  Secure both drive shafts to flange shafts → Rep. Gr.40.
–  Install front wheels → Rep. Gr.44.
–  Fill up gear oil in front final drive → Chapter.
–  Check and top up ATF level in planetary gearbox → Chapter.
