Removing and installing selector mechanism Special tools and workshop equipment required

t  Socket and key -T40031- Removing –  Remove selector lever handle → Chapter. –  Remove air conditioner operating unit → Rep. Gr.87. –  Remove ashtray in centre console → Rep. Gr.68.

–  Release the 4 retainers -arrows- and lift off the cover -1- including the guide. –  Unplug electrical connector from the side of the guide. –  Unplug electrical connector at selector lever lock solenoid -N110-.

–  Lift retaining tab -A- and pull off locking cable laterally in direction of -arrow-.

–  Shift selector lever to position “D”. –  Insert socket and key -T40031- through access hole in selector mechanism and loosen clamping bolt at rear of selector lever cable approx. 1 turn.   Note t  Only loosen clamping bolt approx. one turn - do not remove. t  Clamping bolt can only be accessed with selector lever in position “D”. t  With clamping bolt loosened, selector lever must remain in position “D”.

–  Remove rear noise insulation (loosen fasteners -2- and -3-).

–  Remove front tunnel brace -2-, to do so unscrew bolts -1-.   Note -Items 3 and 4- can be disregarded.

Caution The flexible joint (de-coupling element) on the front exhaust pipe must not be bent more than 10° – otherwise it can be damaged. –  Unscrew nuts -arrows- from connections in front of and behind particulate filter. –  Tie up particulate filter to body (electrical wiring and pressure lines remain connected).

–  Remove heat shield below selector mechanism -arrows-.

Vehicles with noise insulation -A- located below selector mechanism: –  Remove the four retaining washers -arrows-. –  Pull off noise insulation -A- and slide it forwards on selector lever cable.

All models: –  Pull off retaining clip -1- for selector lever cable from the side. –  Pull selector lever cable -2- out of selector mechanism.   Note Do not bend or kink the selector lever cable.

–  Remove nuts -arrows-.   Note The assistance of a second mechanic is required to detach the selector mechanism from below. –  Press retaining clips -1- and -2- inwards, while pushing selector mechanism downwards. Installing l  Tightening torque → Fig. Installation is carried out in reverse sequence; note the following:   Note Renew retaining washers. –  Install selector lever cable → Chapter. –  Adjust selector lever cable → Chapter. –  Install locking cable → Chapter. –  Adjust locking cable → Chapter. –  Install particulate filter → Rep. Gr.26. –  Install heat shield below selector mechanism → Rep. Gr.66. –  Check selector mechanism → Chapter.
