Prerequisites for checking heat output and actuation of temperature flaps of air conditioner
Vehicles with a high-voltage system (hybrid vehicles)
For all work on vehicles with a high-voltage system, pay attention to the additional warnings for such vehicles → Chapter and → Electrical system; Rep. gr.93.
As work in the vicinity of high-voltage system components is necessary for the following sequence of operations, perform „Visual inspection of high-voltage components and cables for damage“ → Chapter and heed the „General warnings for working on high-voltage system“ → Electrical system; Rep. gr.93
  WARNING
Danger from unexpected engine starting
When performing general work on vehicles with a high-voltage system, switch off the ignition and remove the ignition key from the passenger compartment.
  WARNING
Working on vehicles with high-voltage wiring:
l  Do not support yourself or tools on high-voltage wiring or associated components --> this can damage the insulation.
l  High-voltage wiring must not be excessively bent or kinked --> this can damage the insulation.
l  The round high-voltage connectors are colour-coded with an external coloured ring and are provided with mechanical coding or guide lugs. It is important to observe this coding when joining up the round high-voltage connectors, otherwise the connectors can be damaged.
  DANGER!
Risk of fatal injury if high-voltage components are damaged.
Observe the following when working in the vicinity of high-voltage components or wiring:
t  It is not permitted to use cutting or forming tools, other sharp-edged tools or heat sources such as welding, brazing, soldering, hot air or thermal bonding equipment.
t  Before starting work, visually inspect the high-voltage components in the areas involved.
t  Before working in the engine compartment, visually inspect the power electronics -JX1-, electric drive motor -V141-, air conditioner compressor -V470- and high-voltage wiring.
t  Before working on the vehicle underbody, visually inspect the high-voltage wiring and covers.
t  Before working on the rear section of the vehicle, visually inspect the high-voltage wiring and the electro-box with the maintenance connector for high-voltage system - TW -.
t  Visually inspect all potential equalisation lines.
Check the following when making the visual inspection:
t  There must be no external damage on any component.
t  The insulation of the high-voltage wiring and potential equalisation lines must not be damaged.
t  There must be no unusual deformation of the high-voltage wiring.
t  All high-voltage components must be identified by a red warning sticker.
Working with ignition switched on or high-voltage system active
  DANGER!
Danger from unexpected engine starting and risk of poisoning in enclosed areas when working with the ignition switched on or with READY activated. Risk of parts of the body and/or clothing becoming trapped or caught up.
Take the following action before switching on the ignition:
t  Move the selector lever to position P
t  Activate the parking brake
t  Switch off the ignition
t  Open the bonnet
t  Connect a charger, e.g. Battery charger -VAS 5095A- to the jump start points of the 12 V vehicle electrical system
t  Switch on the ignition
–  To minimise the number of automatic engine starts with READY active during checking and measurement work, the vehicle batteries must be charged e.g. with the Battery charger, 60A -VAS 5904- in battery back-up mode → Electrical system; Rep. gr.27 and → Electrical system; Rep. gr.93
–  For checking and measurement work where READY has to be active or the ignition switched on, set the selector lever to position „P“, activate the parking brake, arrange the necessary tools such that they cannot come into contact with rotating engine components and be sure to keep well away from rotating components when the engine is running.
  Note
t  The selector lever is also to be set to position „P“ and the parking brake activated for checking and measurement work where the ignition has to be switched on but READY does not have to be active.
t  READY is displayed in the control unit in dash panel insert -J285- via the „Powermeter“ → Owner's manual.
t  For READY activation and deactivation, refer to → Owner's manual (heed the display in the control unit in dash panel insert -J285- when doing so).
All vehicles
  Note
Air conditioning units with an additional connection for glove compartment cooling are being gradually introduced as of 01.2008. This connection is sealed with a plug on vehicles not featuring glove compartment cooling → Chapter. If the plug or the air duct is not properly fitted, cold air will be routed into the passenger's footwell, thus possibly leading to customer complaints about poor heat output for the passenger's footwell.
t  Coolant circuit bled in specified manner → Engine, mechanics; Rep. gr.19.
t  Engine warm (coolant temperature above 80 °C)
t  Radiator and condenser clean; clean if necessary
t  All air ducts, covers and seals OK and properly installed.
t  Air flow through dust and pollen filter not impeded by contamination → Chapter.
t  Air intake (in fresh-air and air recirculation mode) not impeded by contamination or retrofitted components
t  The connection for glove compartment cooling is sealed with a plug (on vehicles not featuring „Glove compartment cooling“ as an optional extra) or the air duct to the glove compartment is fitted as specified (on vehicles with „Glove compartment cooling“ as optional extra) → Chapter.
t  Vehicle not exposed to sunlight.
t  Event recorder of air conditioner operating and display unit, Climatronic control unit -J255- interrogated and erased, basic setting performed and encoding of air conditioner operating and display unit, Climatronic control unit -J255- checked → "Guided fault-finding" function of vehicle diagnostic, testing and information system VAS 5051.
t  Adaption of air conditioner operating and display unit, Climatronic control unit -J255- checked → "Guided fault-finding" function of vehicle diagnostic, testing and information system VAS 5051.
t  All dash panel vents open.
t  Front lid closed
t  Engine running (READY active on vehicles with a high-voltage system) and „warm“ temperature setting on air conditioner operating and display unit, Climatronic control unit -J255- („HI“ in display of air conditioner operating and display unit and Multi Media Interface).
Vehicles with a high-voltage system (hybrid vehicles)
t  Ignition on and READY activated, the engine only starts or runs if warmer coolant is required to attain the set temperature in the passenger compartment or e.g. the drive battery -A2- (hybrid battery) is not sufficiently charged.
t  Ignition on and „warm“ temperature setting on air conditioner operating and display unit, Climatronic control unit -J255- („HI“ in display of air conditioner operating and display unit and Multi Media Interface).
Vehicles with no high-voltage system
t  Engine running
t  Engine running and „warm“ temperature setting on air conditioner operating and display unit, Climatronic control unit -J255- („HI“ in display of air conditioner operating and display unit and Multi Media Interface).
All vehicles
–  If, on vehicles on which it is fitted (not all vehicles), the Climatronic coolant shut-off valve -N422- is not actuated, refer to → Chapter .
–  If, on vehicles on which it is fitted, the coolant circulation pump -V50- (coolant pump -V36-) is actuated (not all vehicles, fitted for example on vehicles with a 6-cyl. FSI engine and vehicles with start/stop system with no „auxiliary heater“ as optional extra and vehicles with a high-voltage system), refer to → Chapter.
–  If, on vehicles with „Auxiliary heater“ as optional extra, the auxiliary heater circulation pump -V55- is actuated and the heater coolant shut-off valve -N279- is not actuated, refer to → Auxiliary heater; Rep. gr.82.
  Note
Vehicles with an „auxiliary heater“ as optional extra are not fitted with a Climatronic coolant shut-off valve -N422- or -V50- (or -V36-). On these vehicles, this function is assumed by the components of the auxiliary heater (heater coolant shut-off valve -N279- and circulation pump -V55-) → Auxiliary heater; Rep. gr.82
Following settings made on air conditioner operating and display unit, Climatronic control unit -J255- of „Basic“ type:
t  „Auto“ mode (lamp in AUTO button lights).
t  „Cold“ temperature setting (display „LO“ on Multi Media Interface display)
t  Air conditioner compressor switched on (lamp in AC button lights).
t  „Maximum speed“ pre-selected for fresh air blower (speed „10“ or higher indicated in Multi Media Interface display).
Following settings made on air conditioner operating and display unit, Climatronic control unit -J255- of „Deluxe“ type:
t  „Auto“ mode (lamp in both AUTO buttons lights)
t  „Cold“ temperature setting for driver and front passenger side (display „LO“ for driver and front passenger side on display of air conditioner operating and display unit and Multi Media Interface)
t  Air conditioner compressor switched on (lamp in AC button lights).
t  „Maximum speed“ pre-selected for fresh air blower (speed „10“ or higher indicated on display of air conditioner operating and display unit and Multi Media Interface)
  Note
t  Lamp in AUTO button(s) goes out when the fresh air blower speed is altered manually.
t  The maximum possible fresh air blower speed depends on various ambient influences (coolant temperature, vehicle electrical system voltage etc.).
–  On vehicles with an air conditioner of the „Deluxe“ type, the potentiometer for rear temperature selection -G538- is set to „Cold“ (fitted in vent of rear centre console).
–  On vehicles with an air conditioner of „Deluxe“ type, the vent of the rear centre console is open.
–  On vehicles with a diesel engine or a petrol engine with supplementary heater, actuation and operation of supplementary heater OK.
  Note
t  The type of supplementary heater depends on the vehicle equipment. At the start of production, all vehicles with a diesel engine are fitted with a supplementary air heater element -Z35-. At a later date, vehicles with „auxiliary heater“ as optional extra will no longer be fitted with the supplementary air heater element -Z35- and the auxiliary heater will be actuated as a supplementary heater.
t  In the event of problems with inadequate heat output at low ambient temperatures on vehicles with a supplementary air heater element -Z35-, also check actuation and operation of the supplementary heater → Chapter.
t  In Model Year 2010, petrol engines designed for operation with bioethanol are being gradually introduced (Flex Fuel Vehicle). These engines are currently also fitted with a supplementary air heater element -Z35- → Chapter.
t  Vehicles with a high-voltage system (hybrid vehicles) and petrol engine are currently also fitted with a supplementary air heater element -Z35- → Chapter.
Functions with engine running (not hybrid vehicles) / READY activated (hybrid vehicles):
  Note
On vehicles with a high-voltage system (hybrid vehicles) and vehicles with a start-stop system, the engine may only run if additional heat output is required to attain the set temperature.
–  Operation of radiator fan(s) (radiator fan -V7- and radiator fan 2 -V177-) (actuation and speed are governed by pressure in refrigerant circuit and engine temperature).
  Note
Depending on the version of the air conditioner operating and display unit, Climatronic control unit -J255-, the radiator fan(s) (radiator fan -V7- and radiator fan 2 -V177-) is/are only switched in as of a certain pressure in the refrigerant circuit (currently as of a pressure of approx. 9 bar). Actuation of the radiator fan(s) is displayed in the measured value block → "Guided fault-finding" function of vehicle diagnostic, testing and information system VAS 5051.
–  Operation of fresh air blower -V2- at maximum speed (speed „10“ or higher)
  Note
The maximum possible fresh air blower speed depends on various ambient influences (coolant temperature, vehicle electrical system voltage etc.).
–  Switching of the air conditioner to air recirculation mode approx. 1 minute after starting the engine (activating READY on vehicles with a high-voltage system), the air flow/fresh-air flap is closed and the air recirculation flap opened, air is drawn in by the fresh air blower -V2- from the passenger compartment beneath the dash panel/glove compartment.
  Note
If one of these requirements is not satisfied, interrogate the event recorder, perform final control diagnosis and read out the measured value block → "Guided fault-finding" function of vehicle diagnostic, testing and information system VAS 5051.
If the above conditions are satisfied:
t  Check heat output and actuation of the temperature flaps (air conditioner of „Basic“ type) → Chapter.
t  Check heat output and actuation of the temperature flaps (air conditioner of „Deluxe“ type) → Chapter.
