Shift Linkage: Testing and Inspection

WARNING:  Move selector lever into "P" position and apply parking brake before carrying out work while the engine is running.

SELECTOR LEVER IN "P" POSITION AND IGNITION KEY TURNED TO "OFF" POSITION

This is the only position in which it should be possible to remove the key.

When the ignition key is removed it should be impossible to move the selector lever out of the "P" position.

SELECTOR LEVER IN "P" POSITION WITH IGNITION SWITCHED ON

Brake Pedal Not Depressed:
-

Selector lever is locked in "P" position.

-

Shift lock solenoid keeps selector lever from moving.

Brake Pedal Depressed:
-

Shift lock solenoid releases selector lever.

-

Selector lever can now be moved to a drive position.

SELECTOR LEVER IN "N" POSITION WITH IGNITION SWITCHED ON

Brake Pedal Not Depressed:
-

Selector lever is blocked and cannot be moved out of "N" position.

-

Shift lock solenoid blocks movement of selector lever.

Brake Pedal Depressed:
-

Shift lock solenoid releases selector lever.

Selector lever can now be moved to a drive position.

NOTE

It must not be possible to operate the starter when the selector lever is in "1", "2", "3", "D " or "R" positions.

At speeds in excess of approx. 5 km/h (3 mph), with the selector lever moved into position "N." the shift lock solenoid must not engage, and must
not block the selector lever. The selector lever can be moved into a driving position.

At speeds of less than 5 km/h (3 mph) (practically stationary) and selector lever in position "N." the shift lock solenoid must only engage after
about 1 second. Then, the selector lever cannot be moved unless the brake pedal is depressed.
