Connected Service and Condition Based Service
Modern BMWs are connected to the responsible BMW Service Centre by telephone. "Connected Service"
means: Component wear is detected by the corresponding control units. Accordingly, a requirement-orientated
service (= Condition Based Service) is computed. This data is sent by SMS text message (Short Message
Service) to a service provider.
The BMW Service Centre calls up this data from the service provider.
The BMW Service Advisor then contacts the customer by phone to agree an appointment for servicing the
vehicle.
This optimisation of service intervals and service offerings is now also available for the E87.
A new feature here is: The remaining distance and/or the absolute due date are calculated separately and
displayed for the scope of maintenance work. The driving profile also influences the calculation: A moderate
driving style will extend the expected intervals.
The last service interval is used as the new starting value for the flexible service intervals.

Steering column switch cluster
On the E87, the steering angle and the locations of the steering-column stalks are recorded optically, without
causing wear.
The pressure points for the steering-column stalks are precisely defined. These pressure points do not change
throughout the service life of the vehicle. Clearly defined pressure points give a clear response that can be felt
and thus contribute to active safety.
