Soft top abrasion areas

E36 / Z3 roadster

Complaint: 

-

Abrasion areas on the outer hood covering in the region of the 3rd bow.

-

Pressure points and folds in the rear window.

Only black soft tops affected!

Cause: 

1. 

The folded soft top lays under tension in the soft top box.

2. 

When the soft top is folded back, the rear window beading rubs against the hood
covering and the rear window.

3. 

When driving with the top open, a relative movement is generated within the hood
covering.

Procedure:

Series:

1. 

Rear window beading introduced into series production from 
week 36/1996
Introduction of modified rear window beading (flatter, softer version).

2. 

Other measures introduced into series production from week 17/1997

-

Introduction of an optimised hood covering with folding aids (side pockets).

-

Pneumatic spring on the soft top linkage.
The pneumatic spring allows the soft top to drop more slowly into the soft top box.
It is no longer possible to "throw" the soft top into the soft top box.
When stored, the soft top sits more firmly in the soft top box, and is therefore no
longer prone to rubbing.

The pneumatic spring cannot be retrofitted.

-

Two metal strips sewn and glued above and below the rear window and rubber
tensioning straps between the 3rd bow and the hood covering prevent bending
and folding.

Note: Beige soft tops (red and blue on the M roadster) have been delivered with
side pockets and the modified rear window since the start of series production.

Service:

In the event of a complaint about a vehicle manufactured before May 1997, the hood
covering should be replaced.

Please refer to repair instructions 54 31 020.

The new hood covering prevents abrasion areas and pressure points forming.

In addition to the repair instructions, the following procedure is also necessary:

-

Replace the two retaining brackets (window guide), already mounted in the hood
covering (please refer to Electronic Parts Catalogue, attachments for soft top,
illustration number 13).

-

Replace the support rail on the front of the 1st bow (please refer to Electronic Parts
Catalogue, attachments for soft top, illustration number 17).

-

Rivet the two tensioning straps onto the 3rd bow. This is done by laying the tensioning
