Differential Carrier: Service and Repair

Differential Carrier Assembly Replacement

Removal Procedure

Note:  The intermediate wheel drive shaft and the differential are to be installed and removed as a assembly.

1. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle   (See: Maintenance/Vehicle Lifting/Service and Repair).
2. Lower the front frame assembly. Refer to Drivetrain and Front Suspension Frame Replacement (All Wheel Drive)   (See: Body and

3. Remove front propeller shaft from the differential and position out of the way. Refer to Front Propeller Shaft Replacement   (See: Drive/Propeller

Shafts, Bearings and Joints/Drive/Propeller Shaft/Service and Repair/Front Propeller Shaft Replacement).

4. Remove the right front wheel drive shaft. Refer to Front Wheel Drive Shaft Replacement - Left Side   (See: Drive Axles, Bearings and Joints/Axle

Shaft Assembly/Service and Repair).

5. Remove the left front wheel drive shaft. Refer to Front Wheel Drive Shaft Replacement - Right Side   (See: Drive Axles, Bearings and Joints/Axle

Shaft Assembly/Service and Repair).

6. Remove the intermediate wheel drive shaft support bearing. Refer to Front Wheel Drive Intermediate Shaft Bearing Replacement   (See: Drive

Axles, Bearings and Joints/Axle Shaft Assembly/Support - Half Shaft/Short Shaft/Service and Repair).

7. Position a transmission jack beneath the differential.
8. Firmly secure the differential to the transmission jack.
9. Remove the front differential to oil pan mounting bolts.

10. Remove the intermediate wheel drive shaft and the front differential from the oil pan.
11. Remove the differential assembly from the vehicle.
