Oil Level Warning Indicator: Description and Operation
Low Oil Lamp
Low Oil Lamp Circuit
Purpose:
When coolant temperature drops a specified amount, the PCM software checks for an open in the engine oil level sensor. Should the sensor be
open, low oil level, the PCM would illuminate the low oil level indicator.
Operation:
The "LOW OIL LEV" indicator ground is controlled by the PCM which also supplies battery power to the engine oil level sensor. The PCM will
not check for a low oil condition unless the drop in engine coolant temperature drops a certain number of degrees since the last ignition "OFF"
cycle.
If these conditions are not met, the "LOW OIL LEV" indicator will come on for a two second bulb check only. If the indicator comes on because
of a low oil condition, it will stay on, even if oil is added to the crankcase, for the rest of the current ignition cycle.
A low oil conditions exists when 2.5-2.75 quarts of oil remain in the engine oil pan.
Location:
The "LOW OIL LEV" indicator is located in the instrument panel.
The low oil level sensor is located in the engine oil pan.
