Ignition Control Module: Description and Operation
Knock Sensor Circuit
PURPOSE
The spark control module is used to retard ignition timing up to 20° to reduce spark knock in the engine. This allows the engine to use maximum
spark advance to improve driveability and fuel economy.
OPERATION
The knock sensor system is used to detect engine detonation. The PCM will retard the spark timing based on signals from the knock sensor module
.
The knock sensors produce an AC voltage which is sent to the knock sensor module. The amount of AC voltage produced by the sensors depend
upon the amount of knock. This signal is input to the PCM where it adjusts the Ignition Control (IC) to reduce spark knocking.
LOCATION
The knock sensor module is located in the top of the PCM.
