Installing The Wheel Bearing

Installing The Axle Seal

REMOVE OR DISCONNECT

1. Raise and support the vehicle on a hoist.
2. The wheel and tire assembly.
3. The rear brake drum. 
4. The rear axle carrier cover.
5. The pinion shaft screw from the differential case. 
6. The pinion shaft from the vehicle.

Remove the shaft from the case on vehicles without a locking differential.

With a locking differential, remove the shaft part way and rotate the case until the Pinion shaft touches the housing.

Use a screwdriver or similar tool to enter the case and rotate the lock until, it aligns with the thrust block.

7. The rear axle shaft lock from the differential case.

Push the flange of the axle shaft towards the differential. Do not force or hammer the shaft to move the shaft.

Remove the lock from the button end of the axle shaft. 

8. The axle shaft from the vehicle.

Inspect

-

All of the parts for wear. Replace as necessary.

9. The axle shaft seal from the vehicle using J 23689.

10. The axle shaft bearing from the vehicle.

-

Using J 23689 form 1/2 inch ring gear, axle or J 29712 for 9 1/2 inch ring gear to pull the bearing from the axle.

Insert the tool into the axle bore so that it grasps behind the bearing. Tighten the nut and washer against the face of the bearing. Pull the
bearing out using J 2619-01.

INSTALL OR CONNECT

1. The axle shaft bearing to the vehicle using J 23690 or J29713 for the 9,1/2 finch ring gear.
2. The axle shaft seal to the vehicle using J 2i128, or J 29713 for they 1/2,inch ring gear. 
3. Lubricate the axle bearing and seal with wheel bearing lubricant. 
4. The axle shaft to the vehicle.

Push the flange of the axle shaft towards the differential. Dogtrot force or hammer the shaft to move the shaft.

Install the shaft to the case on vehicles without a locking differential.

-

With a locking differential, install the shaft part way and rotate the case until the pinion shaft touches the housing.
