From the PASSENGER side of vehicle, turn the ignition key to "OFF", then "ON", and observe the instrument cluster airbag light. The light
should go on for 6 to 8 seconds, then go out. The system is functioning normal.
NOTICE:
IF AIRBAG WARNING LIGHT EITHER FAILS TO LIGHT, OR GOES ON AND STAYS ON; THERE IS A SYSTEM
MALFUNCTION. YOU MUST REFER TO THE DIAGNOSTIC TEST MANUAL AND USE THE DRB II TO PROPERLY
DIAGNOSE THE PROBLEM.
Airbag Module
WARNING:
BEFORE BEGINNING ANY AIRBAG SYSTEM INSTALLATION OR REMOVAL PROCEDURES, REMOVE AND ISOLATE THE
NEGATIVE (-) BATTERY CABLE (GROUND) FROM THE VEHICLE BATTERY.
THE SPECIFIED FASTENERS, SCREWS, AND BOLTS MUST NEVER BE REPLACED WITH ANY SUBSTITUTES. ANY TIME A NEW
FASTENER IS NEEDED, YOU MUST REPLACE WITH THE CORRECT ONES PROVIDED IN THE SERVICE PACKAGE OR ONES LISTED
IN THE PARTS BOOKS.
Removal
1.
Disconnect battery ground cable and isolate.
2.
Use special socket #6239 to remove four tamper-proof nuts holding the airbag module in place on the steering wheel.
3.
Lift the module high enough to remove the clockspring connecting wire.
4.
Remove the airbag module.
Installation
1.
Connect the clockspring wiring connector to the module by pressing straight in on the connector until you hear a "snap" noise.
2.
Using the specially designed socket, tighten the four nuts from the back side of the steering wheel torquing them to 80-110 in.lbs.
3.
Connect DRB II to ASDM diagnostic connector. (Located at right side of console on G/J-body and at right kick panel on M-body.)
4.
From PASSENGER side of vehicle, turn the ignition key to "ON" position. Exit vehicle with DRB II.
5.
After checking that no one is inside the vehicle, reconnect the negative battery terminal.
6.
Using the DRB II, read and record any fault data including stored faults.
7.
Refer to the Diagnostic Test Manual if any faults found in previous steps.
8.
Erase fault codes using DRB II.
NOTE:
IF PROBLEMS REMAIN, FAULT CODES WILL NOT ERASE.

From the PASSENGER side of vehicle, turn the ignition key to "OFF", then "ON", and observe the instrument cluster airbag light. It should go on
for 6 to 8 seconds, then go out. The system is functioning normal.
