Valve: Service and Repair
VALVE SERVICE
Valves and Valve Springs
Remove
(1) Compress valve springs with universal compressor and Tool MB-990666 (previously issued- essential). Install special tool in foot of compressor.
(2) Remove valve retainer locks, valve spring retainers, valve spring, and valve stem seal if required.
(3) Before removing valves, remove any burrs from valve stem lock groove to prevent damage to the valve guides. Identify valves to insure
installation in original position.
VALVES MUST NOT BE GROUND.
(1) After grinding the seat, where necessary, lap the seat surface of the valve.
(2) After the lapping, carefully wash away every trace of lapping compound with soap and water and dry with compressed air. Take utmost care to
prevent compound from entering the guides. The exhaust valve guides are bronze, the intake guides cast iron.
(3) Install new oil seals on the valve guides.
Valve Gear Reassemble-After Valve Service
(1) Coat valve stems with lubrication oil and insert in cylinder head.
(2) Install valve spring seats and springs and retainers. Compress valve springs only enough to install locks, taking care not to misalign the direction of
compression. Nicked valve stems may result from misalignment of the valve spring compressor.
CAUTION: Check to make sure both locks are in their correct location after removing tool.
