Differential Carrier Inspection Procedures

Checking Rotation Torque of Limited Slip Differential

1. Set shift lever of transaxle to neutral position, lock front wheels and fully release the parking brake.
2. On Colt Vista models, set the 4WD control switch to Off position.
3. On all models, raise rear of vehicle so only one wheel is not in contact with ground surface.
4. Remove wheel and mount end yoke holder tool No. MB990767 or equivalent, to hub bolts using hub nuts.
5. Using a suitable torque wrench, measure side gear rotation torque in forward direction.
6. If rotation torque is not 5.06 ft. lbs. or more on Colt Vista models or 1.8 ft. lbs. on Colt Wagon models, disassemble limited slip differential and

inspect each component.

1. Raise and support vehicle.
2. Disconnect driveshaft at companion flange, refer to Transmission and Drivetrain/Drive/Propeller Shafts, Bearings and Joints/Service and

Repair.

3. Remove caliper assembly and suspend with wire.
4. Attach a spring balance to hub bolt, then pull balance at a right angle to bolt. Measure rotation starting torque.
5. If rotation starting torque is less than 6 inch lbs., bearing is satisfactory.
6. If rotation starting torque is more than 6 inch lbs., ensure tightening torque of axle shaft companion flange is 116-159 ft. lbs. on Eagle Talon and

137 ft. lbs. on Stealth models less turbo or 188-217 ft. lbs. on Stealth models with turbo. If torque is satisfactory, replace wheel bearing.
