Dodge Dakota Truck With 4-Cylinder Engine -- MDH 11-10-17 Through 11-30-09
Wrong flywheel attachment bolts were used on some of the listed model cars and trucks. These bolts do not contain the specified encapsulated adhesive
on the threads. As a result, engine oil may leak past the bolt threads and contaminate clutch surfaces, causing the clutch to slip and eventually fail.
All flywheel attachment bolts on each involved vehicle must be inspected for orange paint on the bolt head, which identifies the correct part. Bolts not
having the orange paint must be replaced with the specified parts.
Important:
Due to their recent manufacture, many of the involved vehicles are likely to be in dealer stock. Be sure to complete the service on
these vehicles before retail delivery.
Also, contact owners of any involved vehicles which have already been delivered and schedule appointments for the service
without delay. There will be direct mailing from Chrysler to owners at this time because of a lack of owner names and addresses in
our records, due to recent shipment of involved vehicles.
Details of this service action are explained in the following sections.
Vehicle List
Each dealer to whom involved vehicles were invoiced (or the current dealer at the same location) will receive a listing of them with this letter, arranged
in Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) sequence. The lists are for dealer reference in arranging for service of involved vehicles.
Each Dodge or Chrysler-Plymouth dealer without a Vehicle List will receive an information copy of this letter by Compak Mail.
Parts
Order required bolt, Service Part Number 6501197, at dealer cost as needed. An allowance will be paid for parts ordered as explained in the Completion
Reporting and Reimbursement section of this letter.
Owner Notification and Service Scheduling
There will be no owner mailing at this time. Dealers are to contact known owners of the listed vehicles.
Service Procedure
IMPORTANT:
Be sure to have several replacement bolts on hand before proceeding with the following steps.
1.
Follow the procedures in the appropriate Service Manuals to remove the transaxle (FWD car) or transmission (Dakota truck) and the clutch.
Note:
Before removing the clutch cover, remember to mark the cover and flywheel so that the cover can later be reinstalled in the same relative
position.
2.
With the flywheel exposed, inspect the heads of the eight flywheel-tocrankshaft attaching bolts.

Correct bolts have orange paint on the bolt head.
If all eight bolts have orange paint on the bolt heads, no further bolt service is required -- proceed to step 4.

Any bolts without orange paint on the heads must be replaced.
Obtain the required number of the proper bolts, P/N 6501197.
