Steering Gear: Service and Repair
Steering Gear - Installation
STEERING GEAR
1. If necessary, install outer tie rods onto inner tie rod threads. As outer tie rods are installed, count out same number rotations as were counted on tie
rod removal. This will get toe setting somewhat close to specification before vehicle is aligned at end of this procedure. Snug tie rod jam nuts on
both ends of gear. Do not tighten at this time. Tighten tie rod jam nuts to specification while performing wheel alignment at end of this procedure.
2. Carefully install power steering gear (1) through left wheel opening using the reverse of how it was removed, then set it up into mounted position.
3. Find power steering gear's center of travel, then match intermediate shaft extension (2) with that on steering gear shaft (3). Slide extension onto
steering gear shaft.
4. Install pinch bolt (1) securing intermediate shaft extension (2) to extension shaft (3). Tighten pinch bolt to 42 Nm (31 ft. lbs.).
5. Slide dust shield down over pinch bolt and steering gear shaft.
6. Center steering gear (2) mounting bosses over mounting holes in crossmember and install two steering gear mounting bolts (1). Tighten mounting
bolts to 75 Nm (55 ft. lbs.).
