Ball Joint: Service and Repair
Front Upper Ball Joint Boot Seal
Removal
REMOVAL
NOTE: Review all Warnings and Cautions. See: Service Precautions.
1. Raise and support vehicle. See: Maintenance.
2. Remove wheel and tire assembly See: Wheels and Tires/Service and Repair/Removal and Replacement/Tires and Wheels - Removal.
3. Remove brake caliper from knuckle and hang out of the way, then remove brake rotor. See: Brakes and Traction Control/Disc Brake System/Brake

4. Remove bolt (3) fastening ABS wheel speed sensor head (2) to steering knuckle (1). Remove sensor head from knuckle.
CAUTION: Do not strike or apply heat to steering knuckle in an effort to separate ball joint studs from steering knuckle.
5. Remove cotter pin (1) and castle nut (6) from upper ball joint stud.
6. Install Puller, Special Tool C-4150A, and release upper ball joint from knuckle. Ball bearing in bolt of Special Tool C-4150A must be centered
in end of lower ball joint stud.
7. Move knuckle away from upper ball joint.
8. Using a suitable cleaner, clean debris away from seal (4) without contaminating joint.
9. Using a screw driver (1) or other suitable tool, pry seal boot (4) off ball joint (3).
