Differential Case: Service and Repair

On models equipped with a limited slip unit, do not attempt to disassemble differential. The differential is serviced as an assembly only.

FRONT DRIVE AXLE

1.  Using suitable puller, remove differential case side bearings.
2.  Remove and discard ring gear attaching bolts.
3.  Using suitable brass drift and hammer, tap ring gear from differential case. Do not attempt to wedge or chisel gear from case.
4.  Using small pin punch, remove pinion mate shaft lockpin.
5.  Remove pinion mate shaft and thrust block.
6.  Rotate pinion gears until aligned with case opening, then remove pinion gears and thrust washers.
7.  Remove side gears and thrust washers.

REAR DRIVE AXLE

1.  Using suitable puller, remove differential case side bearings.
2.  Remove and discard ring gear attaching bolts.
3.  Using suitable brass drift and hammer, tap ring gear from differential case. Do not attempt to wedge or chisel gear from case.
4.  Using suitable punch, remove pinion shaft lockpin.
5.  Using two equal thickness feeler gauges inserted simultaneously between side gear and case, measure and record side gear-to-case clearance for

assembly reference. To ensure accuracy, do not remove either feeler gauge until measurement at both gears has been established.

6.  Remove pinion shaft with suitable punch, then the thrust block.
7.  Rotate pinion gears until aligned with case opening, then remove pinion gears and thrust washers.
8.  Remove side gears and thrust washers.
