Power Steering - Power Steering Pump—2.0L Cougar 1999 (08/1998-01/2001)
Removal and Installation

Special Tool(s)

Expander, Teflon Seal

211 - 188 (13 - 015)

Remover, Pulley, Power Steering Pump

211 - 198 (13 - 021)

Installer, Pulley, Camshaft

303 - 458 (21 - 192)

Removal

  1. Disconnect the battery ground cable.
  1. Remove the accessory drive belt. For additional information, refer to Section  303-05 Accessory Drive.
  1. Lower the vehicle.

  1. Detach the high - pressure tube support bracket.

  1. Detach the high - pressure tube.
    • Disconnect the power steering pressure (PSP) switch electrical connector.
    • Detach the tube support bracket.
    • Cut the three cable ties.

  1. Disconnect the power steering pump supply hose.
    • Allow the fluid to drain into a suitable container.

  1. Detach the coolant hose clamp.

  1. Detach the coolant expansion tank.
    • Position the tank to one side.

  1. Using the special tool, remove the power steering pump pulley.

  1. Disconnect the power steering pump high - pressure tube union.
    • Allow the fluid to drain into a suitable container.

  1. Remove the power steering pump.

Installation

  1. NOTE:
    NOTE:If a new power steering pump is to be installed, the unions that are supplied fitted to the pump should be removed and saved for future use.
    Using the special tool, install a new O - ring seal.
    1. Push the new O - ring seal onto the special tool.
    1. Locate the tool over the union and ease the O - ring seal onto the union.

  1. Install the power steering pump.

  1. Install the power steering pump high - pressure tube union.

  1. NOTE:
    NOTE:Make sure the pulley is flush with the end of the pump shaft.
    Using the special tool, install the power steering pump pulley.

  1. Attach the coolant expansion tank.

  1. Install the coolant hose clamp.

  1. Connect the power steering pump supply hose.

  1. Install the high - pressure tube.
    • Install the PSP switch electrical connector.
    • Install the tube support bracket.
    • Install three new cable ties.
  1. Install the accessory drive belt. For additional information, refer to Section  303-05 Accessory Drive.

  1. Install the high - pressure tube support bracket.
  1. Connect the battery ground cable.
  1. Fill the power steering system. For additional information, refer to the procedure in this section: Start Up Procedure After Pump/Gear Overhaul.
