Steering Column - Steering Column Cougar 1999 (08/1998-01/2001)
Removal and Installation

Removal

All Vehicles
WARNING:
WARNING:Wait at least one minute after disconnecting the battery cables before disconnecting the electronic air bag control module or any other supplemental restraint system electrical connectors. Failure to follow this procedure may increase the possibility of accidentally deploying the air bag(s) and may result in personal injury.

WARNING:Failure to follow any of the warnings that follow or are contained within this section may increase the possibility of accidentally deploying the air bag(s) and may result in personal injury.
WARNING:
WARNING:Always wear safety glasses when repairing an air bag equipped vehicle and when handling the air bag module. Failure to follow this instruction may result in personal injury.
WARNING:
WARNING:Do not use radio keycode savers when working on the air bag system. Failure to follow this warning may cause air bag deployment and may result in personal injury.
WARNING:
WARNING:Carry a live air bag with the bag and trim cover pointed away from your body. An accidental deployment will then deploy with a minimal chance of injury. Failure to follow this instruction may result in personal injury.
WARNING:
WARNING:Place a live air bag on a bench or other surface with the trim cover up. Failure to follow this instruction may result in personal injury.
WARNING:
WARNING:Never probe the connectors on the air bags. Failure to follow this instruction may result in air bag deployment and personal injury.
  1. All warnings should be adhered to.
  1. Disconnect the battery ground cable.
Left - hand drive vehicles

  1. Remove the driver side instrument panel lower panel.
    1. Remove the screw covers.
    1. Remove the screws.
Right - hand drive vehicles

  1. Remove the driver side instrument panel lower panel.
    • Release the four clips.
All Vehicles

  1. Center the steering wheel.
    • Lock in position, remove the ignition key.

  1. Remove the steering column lower shroud.

  1. Remove the steering column upper shroud.

  1. Disconnect the steering column shaft from the flexible coupling.
    • Rotate the clamp plate to disengage.

  1. Disconnect the electrical connectors on the right - hand side of the steering column.
    • Disconnect the windshield wiper switch electrical connector.
    • Disconnect the air bag module electrical connector.
    • Disconnect the ignition switch electrical connector.
    • Disconnect the passive anti - theft system transceiver electrical connector.
    • Disconnect the speed control electrical connector (if equipped).
    • Disconnect the key release interlock actuator electrical connector (if equipped).

  1. Disconnect the electrical connectors on the left - hand side of the steering column.
    1. Disconnect the turn signal/flash to pass switch electrical connector.
    1. Detach the horn electrical connector (and speed control if equipped).

  1. Disconnect the electronic air bag control module electrical connector.
    1. Depress the retaining tang.
    1. Release the two stage self - locking electrical connector: first stage disengages the connector, second stage releases the connector from the air bag control module.

  1. Remove the steering column.
    1. Unclip the wiring harness.
    1. Remove the bolts.
    1. Slide to steering column outwards to disengage the retaining tab.

Installation

  1. WARNING:
    WARNING:Install a new pinch bolt. Failure to follow this instruction may result in personal injury.
    To install, reverse the removal procedure.
