Daytime Running Lamps (Canada)

WARNING:
WARNING:Daytime running lamps (DRL) resistor gets very hot during operation. Be sure resistor has cooled before handling. Failure to follow this instruction may result in personal injury.

The daytime running lamps (DRL) system is designed to turn the low beam headlamps ON at reduced intensity under the following conditions:

  • The ignition switch is in the RUN position.
  • The headlamp switch is in the OFF or PARK position.

The DRL system, which is required by the Canadian government for vehicles sold in Canada, contains the following:

  • A relay (R1) located in the battery junction box (BJB).
  • Wiring connected to the headlamp instrument panel junction wire.

Once the ignition is switched on, the daytime running lamps (dimmed low beam) will illuminate. In addition to the headlamp system, a daytime running lamp relay and a daytime running lamps resistor are installed.

By connecting the resistor in series, the voltage supply to the low beam bulbs is reduced which reduces the power of the low beam.

If the light switch is set to ”headlamps" the daytime running lamps relay is energized and the daytime running lamps resistor is cut.

At the same time voltage is supplied, through the lamp switch, to the low beam bulbs and the bulbs illuminate at full power again.

The diodes for the daytime running lamps only allow the current to flow in one direction when the lamp switch is switched on. Otherwise a few contacts in the lamp switch which are not required for daytime running lamps would be bypassed.
