Diesel MFI Pump Drive Gear: Service and Repair

1.
Disconnect battery ground cables, then remove air cleaner and install intake opening cover, tool T83T-9424-A.
2.
On E-250---350 models, remove engine cover.
3.
On all models, remove injection pump as described under ``Injection Pump, Replace''.
4.
Remove injection pump adapter housing.
5.
Crank engine until No. 1 cylinder is at TDC of compression stroke using one of the following methods:
a. Remove right valve cover and observe No. 1 cylinder valve lever.
b. Remove No. 1 cylinder glow plug and listen for escaping air while turning engine in normal direction of rotation.
c. Using the timing quadrant and vibration damper, scribe a line to indicate TDC.

With engine at TDC compression for No. 1 cylinder, gears with chamfers should be aligned and gears without chamfers should have the ``Y''
marks aligned.
Injection pump and camshaft gears equipped with locating chamfers have one chamfer on the injection pump gear and two
on the camshaft gear. Gears without chamfers are stamped with a ``Y'' on the face for proper alignment.
7.
On gears with chamfers, scribe an alignment mark on front of injection pump gear where chamfer meshes with chamfer of camshaft gear, then
remove gear.

On gears without chamfers, slide injection pump gear back so that top of camshaft gear is exposed when observed from top of front cover. Apply a
small amount of paint to tip of a long screwdriver and mark top of camshaft teeth which mesh with injection pump gear. Also, scribe an alignment
mark on front face of injection pump gear, then remove gear.
9.
Reverse procedure to install. On gears with chamfers, position camshaft gear chamfers in the 12 o'clock position, then install injection pump gear
so that its chamfer meshes with those on camshaft gear. On gears without chamfers, mark new gear as old gear was marked in reference to ``Y''
mark on old gear, then install gear with marks aligned.
