Diagnosis and Testing

Inspection and Verification

  1. Verify the customer concern.
  1. Visually inspect for obvious signs of mechanical damage.

Visual Inspection Chart

Mechanical
  • Visibly damaged or worn parts.
  • Loose or missing bolts and nuts.
  1. If an obvious cause for an observed or reported concern is found, correct the cause (if possible) before proceeding to the next step.
  1. If the concern is not visually evident, verify the symptom and refer to the Symptom Chart.

Gearshift cables incorrectly adjusted.

ADJUST the gearshift cables. REFER to Section  308-00 Manual Transmission/Transaxle and Clutch - General Information.

Gearshift lever damaged. Transaxle gearshift lever and selector lever damaged.

Pinpoint Tests

PINPOINT TEST A : EXTERNAL CONTROLS DO NOT OPERATE FREELY

A1: CHECK THE GEARSHIFT LEVER

Detach the gearshift cables from the gearshift lever.

Is the gearshift lever difficult to operate?
Yes
Disassemble the gearshift mechanism and check for worn or damaged components.
REFER to Gearshift Lever in this section.
No
A2: CHECK THE GEARSHIFT CABLES

Attach the gearshift cables to the gearshift lever.
2
Detach the gearshift cables from the transaxle.

Is the gearshift lever difficult to operate?
Yes
Install new gearshift cables.
No
Transaxle internal concern. Install a new transaxle. REFER to Section  308-03A Manual Transmission/Transaxle / 308-03B Manual Transmission/Transaxle / 308-03D Manual Transmission/Transaxle.
