Diagnosis and Testing

Inspection and Verification

  1. Switch on the parking lamp to check the customer concern.
  1. Check for the following causes of electrical faults:

  • Plug loose, corroded or faulty
  1. If the concern has not been rectified as a result of this check, look up the symptom(s) in the following Symptom Chart and proceed as instructed.

System Checks

PINPOINT TEST A : THE PARKING, REAR OR LICENCE PLATE LAMPS ARE INOPERATIVE

A1: ESTABLISH WHICH LAMP IS MALFUNCTIONING.

Determine the fault condition.

Are the parking lamps, rear lamps or license lamps inoperative at every light switch position?
Yes
No
Light switch in "Park" position and ignition off: GO to A4.
Light switch in "Side lamp" or "Dipped beam" position: GO to A6.
Daytime running lights, light switch in "Off" position and ignition on: GO to A9.
With daytime running lamps, light switch in "Parking lights" position and ignition on: GO to A10.
A2: CHECK THE CJB

Ignition switch in position 0.

Disconnect CJB C16.

Measure the voltage between CJB, connector C16, pin 6, circuit 29S-LF1 (OG/YE), wiring harness side and ground.

Does meter display battery voltage?
Yes
INSTALL a new CJB. CHECK system operates correctly
No
A3: CHECK CIRCUIT 29S-LF1

Disconnect Lamp switch C320.

Disconnect CJB C16.

Measure the resistance between light switch, connector C320, pin 13, circuit 29S-LF1 (OG/YE), wiring harness side and CJB, connector C16, pin 6, wiring harness side.

Is the resistance less than 2 ohms?
Yes
Renew light switch. CHECK system operates correctly
No
REPAIR circuit 29S-LF1. CHECK system operates correctly
A4: CHECK THE HEADLAMP SWITCH

Ignition switch in position 0.

Disconnect Lamp switch C320.

Measure the voltage between the light switch, connector C320, pin 12, circuit 30S-LE29 (RD/GN), wiring harness side and ground.

Does meter display battery voltage?
Yes
Renew light switch. CHECK system operates correctly
No
A5: CHECK CIRCUIT 30S-LE29 AND/OR 30S-LE29A

Disconnect Ignition switch C456.

Measure the resistance between ignition switch, connector C456, pin 2, circuit 30S-LE29 and/or 30S-LE29A (RD/GN), wiring harness side and light switch, connector C320, pin 12, wiring harness side.

Is the resistance less than 2 ohms?
Yes
RENEW the ignition switch. CHECK system operates correctly
No
REPAIR circuit 30S-LE29 and/or 30S-LE29A. CHECK system operates correctly
A6: CHECK FUSE F32
1
Disconnect Fuse F32 (10 A) (CJB).

Check fuse F32

Is fuse F32 (10 A) (CJB) OK?
Yes
No
RENEW fuse F32. If fuse F32 blows again, LOCATE and REMEDY the short circuit using the wiring diagram. CHECK system operates correctly
A7: CHECK THE HEADLAMP SWITCH

Ignition switch in position 0.

Disconnect Lamp switch C320.

Measure the voltage between the light switch, connector C320, pin 11, circuit 29-LE29 (OG/BK), wiring harness side and ground.

Does meter display battery voltage?
Yes
Renew light switch. CHECK system operates correctly
No
A8: CHECK THE CJB

Measure the voltage between CJB C17, pin 8, component side and ground.

Does meter display battery voltage?
Yes
REPAIR circuit 29-LE29. CHECK system operates correctly
No
INSTALL a new CJB. CHECK system operates correctly
A9: CHECK GROUND CONNECTION AT REAR LEFT-HAND TURN SIGNAL LIGHT

Ignition switch in position 0.

Disconnect Lamp switch C320.

Ignition switch in position II.

Measure the voltage between light switch C320, pin 15, circuit 15S-LE29 (GN/BK), wiring harness side and ground.

Does meter display battery voltage?
Yes
Renew light switch. CHECK system operates correctly
No
REFER to: Headlamps - Vehicles Built Up To: 08/2001 (417-01 Exterior Lighting, Diagnosis and Testing).
A10: CHECK FUSE F14 BJB.

CHECK Fuse F14.

Check fuse F14

Is fuse F14 (BJB) OK?
Yes
No
RENEW fuse F14. If fuse F14 blows again, LOCATE and REMEDY the short circuit using the wiring diagram. CHECK system operates correctly
A11: CHECK CIRCUIT 30S-LE29 AND/OR 30S-LE29A

Disconnect Lamp switch C320.

Measure the resistance between fuse F14 and the light switch, connector C320, pin 12, circuit 30S-LE29 / 30S-LE29A (RD/GN) (wiring harness side).

Is the resistance less than 2 ohms?
Yes
Renew light switch. CHECK system operates correctly
No
REPAIR circuit 30S-LE29 and/or 30S-LE29A. CHECK system operates correctly

PINPOINT TEST B : ONE OR MORE PARKING, REAR OR LICENSE PLATE LAMP(S) IS/ARE INOPERATIVE

B2: DETERMINE THE FAULT CONDITION

Check operation of right-hand parking lamps and rear lamps.

Are the right-hand parking lamp and rear lamp inoperative?
Yes
No
Right-hand parking lamp inoperative: GO to B3.
Left-hand parking lamp inoperative: GO to B5.
B3: CHECK CIRCUIT 29S-LF16

Disconnect Right-hand headlamp C834.

Measure the voltage between right-hand headlamp, connector C834, pin 3, circuit 29S-LF16 (OG/GN), wiring harness side and ground.

Does meter display battery voltage?
Yes
No
REPAIR circuit 29S-LF16. CHECK system operates correctly
B4: CHECK CIRCUIT 31-LE30 TO GROUND

Measure the resistance between right-hand headlamp, connector C834, pin 4, circuit 31-LE30 (BK), wiring harness side and ground.

Is the resistance less than 2 ohms?
Yes
RENEW the right-hand headlamp after checking the bulb. CHECK system operates correctly
No
REPAIR circuit 31-LE30 to ground. CHECK system operates correctly
B5: CHECK CIRCUIT 29S-LF7

Disconnect Left-hand headlamp C835.

Measure the voltage between left-hand headlamp, connector C835, pin 3, circuit 29S-LF7 (OG/BU), wiring harness side and ground.

Does meter display battery voltage?
Yes
No
REPAIR circuit 29S-LF7. CHECK system operates correctly
B6: CHECK CIRCUIT 31-LE31 TO GROUND

Measure the resistance between left-hand headlamp, connector C835, pin 4, circuit 31-LE31 (BK), wiring harness side and ground.

Is the resistance less than 2 ohms?
Yes
RENEW the left-hand headlamp after checking the bulb. CHECK system operates correctly
No
REPAIR circuit 31-LE31 to ground. CHECK system operates correctly
B7: CHECK FUSE F48
1
Ignition switch in position 0.
2
CHECK F48 (7.5 A) (CJB).
3
Check fuse F48 (7.5 A) (CJB).

Is fuse F48 OK?
Yes
INSTALL a new CJB. CHECK system operates correctly
No
RENEW fuse F48. If fuse F48 blows again, LOCATE and REMEDY the short circuit using the wiring diagram. CHECK system operates correctly
B8: DETERMINE THE FAULT CONDITION

Check operation of left-hand parking lamp and rear lamp.

Are the left-hand rear lamp and parking lamp inoperative?
Yes
No
Right-hand rear lamp inoperative: GO to B9.
Left-hand rear lamp inoperative: GO to B11.
B9: CHECK CIRCUIT 29S-LF20

Disconnect Right-hand rear lamp assembly C473, C477 or C475.

Measure the voltage between the right-hand rear lamp assembly
  • 3 doors and 5 doors: Connector C473, pin 1,
  • 4-door: Connector C477, pin 3,
  • Estate: Connector C475, pin 2,
  • Circuit 29S-LF20 (OG), wiring harness side and ground.

Does meter display battery voltage?
Yes
No
REPAIR circuit 29S-LF20. CHECK system operates correctly
B10: CHECK CIRCUIT 31-LF24 TO GROUND

Measure the resistance between the right-hand rear lamp assembly,
  • 3 and 5-door versions: Connector C473, pin 3,
  • 4-door: Connector C477, pin 4,
  • Estate: Connector C475, pin 3,
  • Circuit 31-LF24 (BK) (wiring harness side) and ground.

Is the resistance less than 2 ohms?
Yes
RENEW the right-hand rear lamp assembly after checking the bulb. CHECK system operates correctly
No
REPAIR circuit 31-LE24 to ground. CHECK system operates correctly
B11: CHECK CIRCUIT 29S-LF11

Disconnect Left-hand rear lamp assembly C472, C476 or C474.

Measure the voltage between the left-hand rear lamp assembly
  • 3 and 5-door versions: Connector C472, pin 1,
  • 4-door: Connector C476, pin 2,
  • Estate: Connector C474, pin 2,
  • Circuit 29S-LF11 (OG/WH), wiring harness side and ground.

Does meter display battery voltage?
Yes
No
REPAIR circuit 29S-LF11. CHECK system operates correctly
B12: CHECK CIRCUIT 31-LF23 TO GROUND

Measure the resistance between the left-hand rear lamp assembly,
  • 3 and 5-door versions: Connector C472, pin 3,
  • 4-door: Connector C476, pin 6,
  • Estate: Connector C474, pin 3,
  • Circuit 31-LF23 (BK) (wiring harness side) and ground.

Is the resistance less than 2 ohms?
Yes
RENEW the left-hand rear lamp assembly after checking the bulb. CHECK system operates correctly
No
REPAIR circuit 31-LF23 to ground. CHECK system operates correctly
B13: CHECK FUSE F47
1
Ignition switch in position 0.
2
CHECK F47 (7.5 A) (CJB).
3
Check fuse F47 (7.5 A) (CJB).

Is the fuse OK?
Yes
INSTALL a new CJB. CHECK system operates correctly
No
RENEW fuse F47. If fuse F47 blows again, LOCATE and REMEDY the short circuit using the wiring diagram. CHECK system operates correctly
B14: DETERMINE THE FAULT CONDITION

Check operation of license lamps.

Is the right-hand license lamp inoperative?
Yes
No
Left-hand license plate lamp inoperative: GO to B16.
Both license lamps inoperative: GO to B15.
B15: CHECK CIRCUIT 29S-LF21
1
Disconnect Lamp switch C320.

Disconnect Left-hand license lamp C495.

Measure the resistance between light switch, connector C320, pin 16, circuit 29S-LF21 (OG/BK), wiring harness side and left-hand license lamp C495, pin 1, wiring harness side.

Is the resistance less than 2 ohms?
Yes
Renew light switch. CHECK system operates correctly
No
REPAIR circuit 29S-LF21. CHECK system operates correctly
B16: CHECK CIRCUIT 31-LF21 TO GROUND

Disconnect Left-hand license lamp C494.

Measure the resistance between the left-hand license plate lamp, connector C494, pin 1, circuit 31-LF21 (BK) (wiring harness side) and ground.

Is the resistance less than 2 ohms?
Yes
RENEW the left-hand license lamp after checking the bulb. CHECK system operates correctly
No
REPAIR circuit 31-LF21. CHECK system operates correctly
B17: CHECK CIRCUIT 29S-LF22

Disconnect Right-hand license plate lamp C497.

Measure the voltage between right-hand license plate lamp, connector C497, pin 1, circuit 29S-LF22 (OG/BK), wiring harness side and ground.

Does meter display battery voltage?
Yes
No
REPAIR circuit 29S-LF22. CHECK system operates correctly
B18: CHECK CIRCUIT 31-LF22 TO GROUND

Disconnect Right-hand license plate lamp C496.

Measure the resistance between the right-hand license plate lamp, connector C496 Pin 1, circuit 31-LF22 (BK), wiring harness side and ground.

Is the resistance less than 2 ohms?
Yes
After checking the bulb RENEW the right-hand license plate lamp. CHECK system operates correctly
No
REPAIR circuit 31-LF22. CHECK system operates correctly

PINPOINT TEST C : PARKING LAMPS, REAR LAMPS OR LICENSE LAMPS STAY ON CONTINUOUSLY

Ignition switch in position II.

Check whether the parking lamps, rear lamps and license lamps stay on continuously.

Do all parking lamps, rear lamps and license lamps stay on continuously with the light switch in "Off" position?
Yes
No
All parking, rear and license plate lamps are lit up permanently with the light switch in "Parking" position.
For vehicles without daytime running lights: GO to C2.
For vehicles with daytime running lights: GO to C3.
C2: CHECK THE IGNITION SWITCH

Ignition switch in position 0.

Disconnect Ignition switch C456.
3
Check ignition switch for short circuit.

Do all rear lamps and parking lamps stay on continuously with the light switch in "Park" position?
Yes
REPAIR circuit 30S-LE29. CHECK system operates correctly
No
RENEW the ignition switch. CHECK system operates correctly
C3: CHECK IGNITION SWITCH / CIRCUIT 30S-LE29, 30S-LE29A.

Disconnect Ignition switch C456.

Disconnect Fuse F14 (10 A) (BJB).

Check ignition switch / circuit 30S-LE29, 30S-LE29A.

Do all rear lamps and parking lamps stay on continuously with the light switch in "Park" position?
Yes
REPAIR circuit 30S-LE29 and/or 30S-LE29A. CHECK system operates correctly
No
RENEW the ignition switch. CHECK system operates correctly
C4: CHECK THE HEADLAMP SWITCH

Ignition switch in position 0.

Disconnect Lamp switch C320.

Ignition switch in position II.

Check whether the parking lamps, rear lamps and license lamps stay on continuously.

Do all parking lamps and rear lamps stay on continuously?
Yes
No
License lamps stay on continuously: GO to C7.
License lamps do not stay on continuously, vehicles without daytime running lights: RENEW the light switch. CHECK system operates correctly
License lamps do not stay on continuously, vehicles with daytime running lights:
REFER to: Daytime Running Lamps (DRL) - Vehicles Built Up To: 08/2001 (417-04 Daytime Running Lamps (DRL), Diagnosis and Testing).
C5: CHECK THE CJB

Ignition switch in position 0.

Disconnect CJB C16.

Ignition switch in position II.

Check whether the parking, rear and license plate lamps are all permanently lit up.

Do the parking lamps and rear lamps stay on continuously?
Yes
Right-hand parking and rear lamps permanently switched on: REPAIR circuit 29S-LF20 or 29S-LF16. CHECK system operates correctly
Left-hand parking and rear lamps permanently switched on: REPAIR circuit 29S-LF11 or 29S-LF7. CHECK system operates correctly
No
C6: CHECK CIRCUIT 29S-LF1

Measure the voltage between CJB, connector C16, pin 6, circuit 29S-LF1, wiring harness side and ground.

Does meter display battery voltage?
Yes
REPAIR circuit 29S-LF1. CHECK system operates correctly
No
INSTALL a new CJB. CHECK system operates correctly
C7: CHECK THE CENTRAL TIMER MODULE

Disconnect CTM C1000.

Check central timer module (CTM) for short circuit

Do the license lamps stay on continuously?
Yes
No
RENEW THE CTM. CHECK system operates correctly
C8: CHECK THE CJB

Disconnect CJB C15.

Check CJB for short circuit.

Do the license lamps stay on continuously?
Yes
REPAIR circuit 29S-LE18, 29S-LF21 or 29S-LF22. CHECK system operates correctly
No
INSTALL a new CJB. CHECK system operates correctly
