Diagnosis and Testing

Refer to Wiring Diagrams Section 417-01, for schematic and connector information.

Inspection and Verification

  1. Press the brake pedal to check the stoplamps and verify the customer concern.
  1. Check for the following causes of electrical faults:

Visual inspection

Electrical
  • Circuit(s)
  • Fuse
  • Bulb(s)
  • Plug loose, corroded or faulty
  1. If the concern has not been rectified as a result of this check, look up the symptom(s) in the following troubleshooting Symptom Chart and proceed as instructed.

Pinpoint Tests

PINPOINT TEST A : THE STOPLAMPS ARE INOPERATIVE

A1: CHECK FUSE F54

CHECK F54.

Is the fuse OK?
Yes
No
RENEW fuse F54. If fuse F54 blows again, LOCATE and REMEDY the short circuit using the wiring diagram. CHECK system operates correctly
A2: CHECK THE VOLTAGE AT FUSE F54

Ignition switch in position II.

Measure the voltage between fuse F54 and ground.

Does the meter display battery voltage?
Yes
No
A3: CHECK THE VOLTAGE AT THE STOPLAMP SWITCH

Disconnect C444.

Ignition switch in position II.

Measure the voltage at C444, pin 3.

Does the meter display battery voltage?
Yes
No
REPAIR circuit 15-LG23. CHECK system operates correctly
A4: STOP LAMP SWITCH INSPECTION

Disconnect C444.

Ignition switch in position II.

Use a suitable cable to bridge connector C444 between pin 3 and pin 1.

Do the stoplamps come on?
Yes
RENEW brake light switch. CHECK system operates correctly
No
Vehicles with electronic stability program (ESP): GO to A5.
Vehicles without electronic stability program (ESP): REPAIR circuit 15S-LG14A (GN/RD) or 15S-LG14B (GN/RD). CHECK system operates correctly
A5: CHECK THE STOPLAMP RELAY
1
Disconnect C1014 BJB.

Ignition switch in position II.

Depress the brake pedal.

Check the voltage at C1014, BJB, pin 3.

Does the meter display battery voltage?
Yes
No
REPAIR circuit 15S-LG14B, 15S-CF58 or 15S-CF58A. CHECK system operates correctly
A6: CHECK THE STOPLAMP RELAY

Disconnect C1014 BJB.

Ignition switch in position II.

Depress the brake pedal.

Use a suitable cable to bridge connector C1014, BJB, between pin 3 and pin 4.

Do the stoplamps come on?
Yes
No
REPAIR circuit 15S-LG14A. CHECK system operates correctly
A7: CHECK THE STOPLAMP RELAY

Disconnect C1014 BJB.

Ignition switch in position II.

Measure the voltage at C1014, BJB, pin 1.

Does the meter display battery voltage?
Yes
No
REPAIR circuit 15-CF58. CHECK system operates correctly
A8: CHECK THE STOPLAMP RELAY

Disconnect C1014 BJB.

Use the ohmmeter to measure the resistance between C1014, BJB, pin 2 and ground.

Is a resistance of less than 2 ohm displayed?
Yes
RENEW the stoplamp relay. CHECK system operates correctly
No
REPAIR circuit 31S-CF71, and if necessary RENEW the electronic stability program (ESP) module. CHECK system operates correctly
A9: CHECK POWER FEED

Disconnect Fuse F1.

CHECK Fuse F1.

Is fuse F1 in the BJB OK?
Yes
No
RENEW fuse F1. If fuse F1 blows again, LOCATE and RECTIFY the short circuit with the aid of the Wiring Diagrams. CHECK system operates correctly

Ignition switch in position II.

Measure the voltage at fuse F1.

Does the meter display battery voltage?
Yes
REPAIR circuit 15-DA3, and if necessary RENEW the CJB. CHECK system operates correctly
No
REPAIR circuit 15-DC1, and if necessary RENEW the ignition relay. CHECK system operates correctly

PINPOINT TEST B : ONE OR MORE STOPLAMPS ARE INOPERATIVE

Does the additional high-mounted stoplamp work?

No
B2: CHECK CIRCUIT 15S-LG6

Ignition switch in position 0.

Disconnect Additional high-mounted stoplamp C107.

Ignition switch in position II.

Depress the brake pedal.

Measure the voltage between the additional high-mounted stoplamp on the rear window, connector C107, pin 1, circuit 15S-LG6 (GN/YE), wiring harness side and ground.

Does the meter display battery voltage?
Yes
No
REPAIR circuit 15S-LG6. CHECK system operates correctly
B3: CHECK GROUND CIRCUIT 31-LG6

Ignition switch in position 0.

Measure the resistance between the additional high-mounted stoplamp on the rear window, connector C107, pin 2, circuit 31-LG6 (BK), wiring harness side and ground.

Is the resistance less than 2 ohms?
Yes
RENEW the additional high-mounted stoplamp on the rear window after checking the bulb. CHECK system operates correctly
No
REPAIR ground circuit 31-LG6. CHECK system operates correctly
B4: CHECK THE STOPLAMPS

Check the operation of the stoplamps.

Are both stoplamps inoperative?
Yes
REPAIR circuit 15S-LG14 (GN/RD) and/or soldered connection S154 or S212. CHECK system operates correctly
No
The stoplamp RH-side is inoperative: GO to B5.
The stoplamp LH-side is inoperative: GO to B7.
B5: CHECK CIRCUIT 15S-LG21

Ignition switch in position 0.

Disconnect Right-hand rear lamp assembly C473, C475 or C477.

Ignition switch in position II.

Measure the voltage between the right-hand rear lamp assembly, circuit 15S-LG21 (GN/BK), wiring harness side and ground.
  • 3/5-door version: C473, pin 2
  • 4-door: C477, pin 2
  • Estate: C475, pin 1

Does the meter display battery voltage?
Yes
No
REPAIR circuit 15S-LG21. CHECK system operates correctly
B6: CHECK GROUND CIRCUIT 31-LF24 OR 31-LF4

Ignition switch in position 0.

Measure the resistance between the right-hand rear lamp assembly, circuit 31-LF24 (BK), 31-LF4, wiring harness side and ground.
  • 3/5-door version: C473, pin 3
  • 4-door: C477, pin 4
  • Estate: C475, pin 3

Is the resistance less than 2 ohms?
Yes
After testing the bulb, RENEW the right-hand rear lamp assembly. CHECK system operates correctly
No
REPAIR ground circuit 31-LF24 or 31-LF4. CHECK system operates correctly
B7: CHECK CIRCUIT 15S-LG14A

Ignition switch in position 0.

Disconnect Rear lamp assembly C472, C474 or C476.

Ignition switch in position II.

Measure the voltage between the left-hand rear lamp assembly, circuit 15S-LG14A (GN/RD), wiring harness side and ground.
  • 3/5-door version: C472, pin 2
  • 4-door: C476, pin 1
  • Estate: C474, pin 1

Does the meter display battery voltage?
Yes
No
REPAIR circuit 15S-LG14A. CHECK system operates correctly
B8: CHECK GROUND CIRCUIT 31-LF23 OR 31-DA18

Ignition switch in position 0.

Measure the resistance between the left-hand rear lamp assembly, circuit 31-LF23 (BK) or 31-DA18 (BK), wiring harness side and ground.
  • 3/5-door version: C472, pin 3
  • 4-door: C476, pin 6
  • Estate: C474, pin 3

Is the resistance less than 2 ohms?
Yes
After testing the bulb, RENEW the left-hand rear lamp assembly. CHECK system operates correctly
No
REPAIR ground circuit 31-LF23 or 31-DA18. CHECK system operates correctly

PINPOINT TEST C : STOPLAMPS PERMANENTLY SWITCHED ON

Yes
REPAIR circuit 15S-LG21 (GN/BK), 15S-LG14A (GN/RD), 15S-LG14 (GN/RD) or 15S-LG6 (GN/YE). CHECK system operates correctly
No
C2: CHECK THE STOPLAMP SWITCH
1
Disconnect Connector C444.

Ignition switch in position II.

Do the stoplamps come on?
Yes
Vehicles without electronic stability program: GO to C3.
Vehicles with electronic stability program: GO to C6.
No
RENEW brake light switch. CHECK system operates correctly
C3: CHECK THE MODULES

Disconnect ABS control module C385.
2
Disconnect Powertrain control module C415.
3
Disconnect Speed control module C831.

Do the stop lamps illuminate continuously?
Yes
REPAIR circuits 15S-CF58, 15S-LG14B, 15S-LG14A, 15S-RN2, 15S-RE13 or 15S-PG17. CHECK system operates correctly
No
C4: CHECK THE ABS CONTROL MODULE
1
Connect ABS control module.
2
Ignition switch in position II.

Do the stop lamps illuminate continuously?
Yes
RENEW the ABS control module. CHECK system operates correctly
No
C5: CHECK THE POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE (PCM)

Connect Powertrain control module (PCM).

Ignition switch in position II.

Do the stop lamps illuminate continuously?
Yes
RENEW the powertrain control module (PCM). CHECK system operates correctly
No
RENEW the speed control module. CHECK system operates correctly
C6: CHECK CIRCUIT 15S-LG14A

Disconnect BJB C1014.

Ignition switch in position II.

Do the stop lamps illuminate continuously?
Yes
REPAIR circuit 15S-LG14A to C51. CHECK system operates correctly
No
C7: CHECK THE MODULES
1
Disconnect Electronic stability program (ESP) module C830.
2
Disconnect Powertrain control module C415.
3
Disconnect Speed control module C831.

Ignition switch in position II.

Do the stop lamps illuminate continuously?
Yes
REPAIR circuits 15S-PG7, 15S-PG17, 15S-RE13, 15S-RN2, 15S-CF58 or 15S-CF58A. CHECK system operates correctly
No
C8: CHECK THE ELECTRONIC STABILITY PROGRAM (ESP) MODULE

Connect Electronic stability program (ESP) module .

Ignition switch in position II.

Do the stop lamps illuminate continuously?
Yes
RENEW the electronic stability program (ESP) module. CHECK system operates correctly
No

Component Tests

Brake light relay

1. Check break contact.

Measure the resistance between pin 3 and pin 4.

Is the resistance less than 1 ohm?

If yes, continue with 2.

If not, renew the relay.

2. Check make contact.

Measure the resistance at the socket connection between pin 3 and pin 5.

Is the resistance greater than 10 Kohms?

If yes, continue with 3.

If not, renew the relay.

3. Check relay contact in activated condition.

Connect power supply positive terminal to pin 1.

Connect power supply negative terminal to pin 2.

Measure the resistance at the socket connection between pin 3 and pin 5.

Can the relay be heard to switch and the resistance is less than 1 Ohm?

If yes, the relay is OK.

If not, renew the relay.
