Special Tool(s)

Worldwide Diagnostic System (WDS)

Principles of Operation Front Parking Aid

The parking aid system detects objects in front of the vehicle when the vehicle speed is less than 16 mph (25km/h). The parking aid module does this by calculating the distance to an object by the use of four parking aid sensors mounted in the front bumper. The sensors can detect objects approximately 1.2m to the front of the vehicle, 80 cm to the front side of the vehicle and 16 cm above the ground. An intermittent warning tone is generated from a speaker located under the left-hand front seat. The interval between the tones decreases as the vehicle gets closer to an object. When an object is detected within 25 cm of the sensors, the warning tone becomes continuous.

If a distance from an object remains constant for more than 3 seconds, the last distance ratio set is maintained for the parking aid center sensors while the parking aid outer sensors are switched off. For example, driving alongside to a wall.

The parking aid switch indicator light emitting diode (LED) will illuminate when the ignition is turned to position II. Pressing the parking aid switch on the instrument panel will both disable the front parking aid and the parking aid switch indicator LED. The system will always enable when the ignition switch is turned to position II. The parking aid system will be disabled if the vehicle speed is greater than 16 mph (25km/h) or if a concern is detected in one of the four front parking aid sensors, the front parking aid speaker or the parking aid module. When the parking aid system is enabled and a concern is detected, the system will indicate this by the parking aid switch indicator LED flashing and a continuous tone from one of the parking aid speakers for up to 5 seconds.

Principles of Operation Rear Parking Aid

The parking aid system detects objects behind the vehicle when the vehicle reverse gear select input to the parking aid module is enabled. The parking aid module does this by calculating the distance to an object by the use of four parking aid sensors mounted in the rear bumper. The sensors can detect objects approximately 1.6m to the rear of the vehicle, 80 cm to the rear side of the vehicle and 16 cm above the ground. An intermittent warning tone is generated from a speaker located behind the left-hand loadspace trim.

The parking aid switch indicator LED will illuminate and a short tone will sound from the rear parking aid speaker as a system check when the ignition switch is turned to position II and reverse gear is engaged. The parking aid system will always enable when the ignition switch is turned to position II and reverse gear is engaged. The parking aid system will be disabled if reverse gear is disengaged or if a concern is detected in one of the four rear parking aid sensors, the rear parking aid speaker or the parking aid module. When the parking aid system is enabled and a concern is detected, the system will indicate this by the parking aid switch indicator LED flashing and a continuous tone from one of the parking aid speakers for up to 5 seconds.

Inspection and Verification

  1. Verify the customer concern.
  1. Visually inspect for obvious signs of electrical damage.

  1. If an obvious cause for an observed or reported concern is found, correct the cause (if possible) before proceeding to the next step.
  1. If the cause is not visually evident, connect the WDS to the data link connector (DLC) and select the vehicle to be tested from the diagnostic menu.
  1. Retrieve the Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC)s and refer to the Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) Index.
  1. If no DTCs are retrieved or there is no communication with the module, proceed to the Symptom Chart to continue diagnostics.
