Removal and Installation

Special Tool(s)

Pinion Bearing Cone Remover

205-D002 (D79L-4621-A) or equivalent

Impact Slide Hammer

100-001 (T50T-100-A)

Front Hub Remover

205-D070 (D93P-1175-B) or equivalent

Pinion Bearing Cup Replacer

205-014 (T60K-4614-A)

Differential Bearing Cup Replacer

308-153 (T88C-7025-BH)

Installer, Half Shaft

204-161 (T97P-1175-A)

Removal

All vehicles
NOTE:
NOTE:When a new wheel knuckle is installed a new wheel bearing must also be installed.
  1. Remove the brake shoes. For additional information refer to Section 206-02 Drum Brake.

  1. Remove the wheel hub nut.

  1. Using the special tool, remove the wheel hub.

  1. NOTE:
    NOTE:This step may not be necessary if the inner wheel bearing race remains in the wheel knuckle, after removing the wheel hub.
    Using the special tool, press the inner wheel bearing race from the wheel hub.

  1. Remove the snap ring.
Vehicles with ABS

  1. Position the anti-lock brake sensor (ABS) aside.
    1. Remove the ABS sensor bolt and bracket bolts.
    1. Position the ABS sensor aside.
All vehicles

  1. Disconnect the parking brake cable from the brake backing plate.
    • Remove the parking brake cable bolt from the wheel knuckle.

  1. Disconnect the brake line from the wheel cylinder.
    • Remove the brake line bracket bolt.
  1. Support the wheel knuckle.

  1. Remove the lower shock absorber nut.

  1. NOTE:
    NOTE:It may be necessary to hold the ball joint stud to keep it from turning while removing the nut.
    Separate the lower ball joint from the wheel knuckle.
    1. Remove the nut.
    1. Separate the lower ball joint from the wheel knuckle.

  1. NOTE:
    NOTE:It may be necessary to hold the ball joint stud to keep it from turning while removing the nut.
    Separate the upper ball joint from the wheel knuckle.
    1. Remove the nut.
    1. Separate the upper ball joint from the wheel knuckle.

  1. NOTE:
    NOTE:Note the position of the spring insulator and spring for installation.
    Remove the spring.
    • Lower the support to the wheel knuckle.

  1. Remove the wheel knuckle cam bolt.
    1. Mark the position of the adjustment cam notch.
    1. Remove the wheel knuckle cam bolt.

  1. Remove the wheel knuckle.
    1. Remove the wheel knuckle cam.
    1. Remove the wheel knuckle.

  1. Remove the brake backing plate from the wheel knuckle.
    1. Remove the bolts.
    1. Remove the brake backing plate from the wheel knuckle.

Installation

All vehicles

  1. Using the special tools, install a new wheel bearing into the wheel knuckle.

  1. Install the snap ring into the wheel knuckle.

  1. Position the brake backing plate to the wheel knuckle and install the bolts.

  1. Using the wheel hub washer and the special tool, install the wheel hub into the wheel bearing.

  1. Install the wheel hub nut.

  1. Position the wheel knuckle and install the wheel knuckle cam.

  1. Install the wheel knuckle cam bolt loosely.

  1. Support the wheel knuckle and install the spring.

  1. Install the lower shock absorber nut.

  1. Position the upper ball joint and install the nut.

  1. Position the lower ball joint and install the nut.

  1. Tighten the wheel knuckle cam bolt.
    1. Align the wheel knuckle cam.
    1. Tighten the wheel knuckle cam bolt.

  1. Connect the brake line to the wheel cylinder.
    • Install the brake line bracket bolt.

  1. Install the parking brake cable through the brake backing plate.
    • Install the bolt.
Vehicles with ABS

  1. Position the ABS sensor and bracket bolts.
    • Install the bolts.
All vehicles
  1. Install the brake shoes. For additional information, refer to Section 206-02 Drum Brake.
  1. Bleed the brake system. For additional information, refer toSection 206-00 Brake System - General Information.
  1. Check and adjust the wheel alignment as necessary. For additional information, refer to Section 204-00 Suspension System - General Information.
