Removal

  1. Remove the generator. For additional information, refer to section Section 414-02 Generator and Regulator.
  1. Remove the exhaust Y-pipe. For additional information, refer to Exhaust Y-Pipe — 3.0L in this section.

  1. NOTE:
NOTE:If installing a new converter, remove and save the heated oxygen sensor for installation in the new converter.
Using the special tool, disconnect the RH heated oxygen sensor (HO2S) electrical connector.
  1. Disconnect the exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) tube nut from the RH catalytic converter.
  1. Remove and discard the 6 RH exhaust manifold nuts and remove the converter.
  1. Remove and discard the exhaust manifold gasket.

Installation

  1. CAUTION:
CAUTION: If the warpage is greater than 0.76 mm (0.03 inch) replace the catalytic converter.
Inspect the catalytic converter for warped across the manifold flange area.
  1. Position a new exhaust manifold gasket.

  1. CAUTION:
CAUTION:Failure to tighten the catalytic converter nuts to specification before installing the converter bracket bolts will cause the converter to develop an exhaust leak.
    CAUTION:
CAUTION:Failure to tighten the catalytic converter nuts to specification a second time will cause the converter to develop an exhaust leak.
    NOTE:
NOTE:Make sure to tighten the nuts in the sequence in 2 stages.
Position the RH catalytic converter and tighten the 6 exhaust manifold nuts in the sequence shown.
    • Stage 1: Tighten to 25 Nm (18 lb-ft).
    • Stage 2: Tighten to 25 Nm (18 lb-ft).
  1. Connect the EGR tube nut to the RH catalytic converter.
    • Tighten to 40 Nm (30 lb-ft).

  1. NOTE:
NOTE:Apply anti-seize lubricant to the threads of the HO2S before installation.
If installing a new converter, install the HO2S using the special tool.
    • Tighten to 47 Nm (35 lb-ft).
  1. Connect the HO2S electrical connector.
  1. Install the exhaust Y-pipe. For additional information, refer to Exhaust Y-Pipe — 3.0Lin this section.
  1. Install the generator. For additional information, refer to Section 414-02 Generator and Regulator.
