Description and Operation

Headlamps

With the ignition switch in the ON position, the smart junction box (SJB) sends reference signals to the multifunction switch. When the SJB detects the multifunction switch in the HEADLAMPS ON position, the SJB sends voltage to the headlamps. The SJB also monitors the multifunction switch for the low beam, high beam and flash-to-pass requests.

The headlamp assembly has the front parking/turn lamps integrated into the headlamp assembly.

Stoplamps

The stoplamp switch is mounted on the brake pedal bracket. When the brake pedal is applied, the stoplamp switch routes power to the high mounted stoplamp and the SJB. The SJB in turn sends voltage to the rear stoplamps.

Turn and Hazard Lamps

The hazard switch is mounted in the center of the instrument panel below the audio unit. The SJB monitors the multifunction switch and hazard switch for left turn, right turn, and hazard lamps requests. When the SJB detects a request for one of these functions, the SJB sends voltage to the appropriate lamps (front, rear, and side) to flash in sync approximately 80 times per minute. If the SJB detects an inoperative turn/hazard bulb, the SJB sends voltage to the appropriate lamps to flash in sync approximately 160 times per minute.

Parking Lamps

When the SJB detects the multifunction switch in the PARKING LAMPS ON position, the SJB sends voltage to the parking and license plate lamps.

Front Fog Lamps

The front fog lamp switch is mounted on the LH side of the instrument panel. When the ignition switch is in the ON position, the SJB monitors the input from the front fog lamp switch with a voltage reference signal. The front fog lamps can only be illuminated when the parking lamps are on and the high beams are not illuminated. When the SJB detects a request for the front fog lamps to be illuminated, the SJB provides a ground source for the front fog lamp relay. The front fog lamp relay then routes voltage to the front fog lamps.

Rear Fog Lamp

The rear fog lamp switch is located in the center of the instrument panel below the audio unit. When the ignition switch is in the ON position, the SJB monitors the input from the rear fog lamp switch with a voltage reference signal. The rear fog lamp can only be illuminated when the front fog lamps or headlamps are on. When the SJB detects a request for the rear fog lamp to be illuminated, the SJB provides voltage to the rear fog lamp.

Reversing Lamps — Automatic Transaxle

When the ignition switch is in the ON position, the powertrain control module (PCM) monitors the gear selection on the transaxle by sending signals to the transmission range (TR) sensor. When the vehicle is placed in REVERSE, the PCM sends a message over the high speed controller area network (CAN) to the instrument cluster indicating that the vehicle is in REVERSE. The instrument cluster then sends this message over the medium speed CAN to the SJB. When the SJB receives this message, it energizes an internal relay which routes voltage to the reversing lamps.

Reversing Lamps — Manual Transaxle

When the ignition switch is in the ON position, the SJB sends a voltage signal to the reversing lamp switch. When the vehicle is placed in REVERSE, the reversing lamp switch routes the signal to ground. When the SJB detects the reversing lamp switch is engaged, it energizes an internal relay which routes voltage to the reversing lamps.

Trailer Tow

The SJB sends voltage to the trailer tow connector to correspond with the appropriate vehicle exterior lighting requests. These requests include the parking lamps, the turn/hazard lamps, and the stoplamps. A ground circuit is also provided to the trailer tow connector.

Headlamp Leveling

The headlamp leveling feature allows the operator to adjust the vertical position of the headlamps. The headlamp leveling actuators are located inside of each headlamp. The SJB sends voltage to the headlamp leveling actuators when the multifunction switch has been turned to the HEADLAMPS ON position. When the headlamp leveling actuators are powered up, they monitor the headlamp leveling switch position. The headlamp leveling actuators move the headlamps up or down to correspond with the position of the headlamp leveling switch.
