Supplemental Restraint System - Scrapped Vehicle Undeployed Passenger Air Bag Disposal Maverick 2005 (08/2004-)
General Procedures

Remote Deployment

WARNING:
WARNING:Always wear safety glasses when repairing an air bag supplemental restraint system (SRS) vehicle and when handling an air bag module or safety belt retractor/pretensioner assembly. This will reduce the risk of injury in the event of an accidental deployment.
WARNING:
WARNING:Never probe the connectors on the air bag module. Doing so can result in air bag deployment, which can result in personal injury.
WARNING:
WARNING:Carry a live air bag module with the air bag and trim cover or deployment door pointed away from your body. This will reduce the risk of injury in the event of an accidental deployment.
WARNING:
WARNING:Remote deployment is to be carried out outdoors with all personnel at least 6.1 meters (20 feet) away to ensure personal safety. Due to the loud report which occurs when the air bag is deployed, hearing protection is required.
WARNING:
WARNING:Do not place the driver or passenger air bag module with the trim cover or deployment door facing down, as the forces of the deploying air bag could cause it to ricochet and cause personal injury.
WARNING:
WARNING:After deployment, the air bag surface can contain deposits of sodium hydroxide, a product of the gas generant combustion that is irritating to the skin. Wash your hands with soap and water afterwards.
NOTE:
NOTE:A typical passenger air bag disposal is shown that is similar for all vehicles.
  1. Depower the system. For additional information, refer to Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) Depowering and Repowering in this section.
  1. Remove the passenger air bag from the vehicle. For additional information, refer to Passenger Air Bag Module in this section.

  1. Cut and strip all four wires at the air bag electrical connector.

  1. Twist together one wire from each pair.

  1. Obtain two wires (20 gauge minimum) at least 6.1 meters (20 feet) long and attach one end of each wire to each twisted splice.
  1. Place the air bag module on a flat surface in an open outdoor area with the trim cover facing upward.
  1. Remain at least 6.1 meters (20 feet) away from the air bag module.

  1. Deploy the air bag module by touching the other ends of the two wires to the terminals of a 12-volt battery.
  1. To allow for cooling, wait at least ten minutes before approaching the deployed air bag.
  1. Dispose of the deployed air bag module in the same manner as any other part to be scrapped.
