Seating - Front Seat Backrest Mondeo 1997 (08/1996-09/2000)
Disassembly and Assembly

Disassembly
  1. Remove the backrest recliner handwheel.

  1. Detach the outer side trim panel.
    1. Remove the screws.
    1. Detach the clip.

  1. Remove the outer side trim panel.
    • Disconnect the seat height adjust switch.

  1. Detach the wiring harness from the underside of the seat.
    • Cut the cable tie.

  1. Detach the side air bag module wiring harness from the seat wiring harness.

  1. Remove the backrest recliner.
    • Remove the screws.

  1. Detach the side air bag module wiring harness from the seat track.
    • Cut the cable ties.

  1. Remove the front seat backrest.
    • Remove the screws.

  1. Remove the lumbar adjust handwheel (if equipped).

  1. Detach the plastic retaining strip at the base of the backrest.

  1. Detach the backrest cover from the lumbar support spring mat.
    • Cut the hog rings.

  1. Detach the lateral tension rods from the lower seat frame.

  1. Roll the backrest cover down the backrest.

  1. NOTE:
    NOTE:Mark position of hog rings on the lumbar support spring mat.
    Detach the backrest cover from the lumbar support spring mat.
    • Cut the hog rings.

  1. Detach the front of the backrest cover.
    • Cut the hog rings.

  1. Detach the rear of the backrest cover.
    • Cut the hog rings.
  1. Remove the head restraint.

  1. Remove the head restraint guides.
    • Using a suitable screwdriver, depress the locking tang.
  1. Remove the backrest cover.

  1. Remove the pad (seat with side air bag shown).
  1. Remove the side air bag module. For additional information, refer to Section  501-20A Safety Belt System / 501-20B Supplemental Restraint System.

  1. Detach the lumbar support adjuster (if equipped).

  1. Remove the lumbar support spring mat.
    • Detach the springs.
    • Detach the clip.

Assembly
  1. WARNING:
    WARNING:Locate hog rings as indicated by white markings on the lumbar support spring mat. Install two hog rings in each position to secure the seat cover on the air bag side of the seat. Failure to follow this instruction will impair side air bag deployment and may result in personal injury.
    WARNING:
    WARNING:If a new pad is to be installed on a seat with a side air bag module, the pre-cut foam must be removed. Failure to follow this instruction will impair side air bag deployment and may result in personal injury.
    NOTE:
    NOTE:Use hog ring pliers to close the hog rings. Do not use any other tool. The hog rings must be closed to overlap as illustrated.
    To assemble, reverse the disassembly procedure.
