Supplemental Restraint System - Air Bag Sliding Contact Mondeo 1997 (08/1996-09/2000)
Removal and Installation

Removal

WARNING:
WARNING:To avoid accidental deployment the air bag control module backup power supply must be depleted. Wait at least one minute after disconnecting the battery ground cable(s) before commencing any repair or adjustment to the supplemental restraint system (SRS), or any component(s) adjacent to the SRS sensors. Failure to follow these instructions may result in personal injury.
WARNING:
WARNING:To minimize the possibility of premature deployment, do not use radio key code savers when working on the supplemental restraint system. Failure to follow this instruction may result in personal injury.
WARNING:
WARNING:Never probe the electrical connectors of air bag modules or any other supplemental restraint system component. Failure to follow this instruction may result in personal injury.

  1. NOTE:
    NOTE:Make sure the road wheels are in the straight ahead position.
    Centralize the steering and lock it in position.

  1. Remove the steering column upper shroud.

  1. Remove the steering column lower shroud.
  1. Remove the steering wheel. For additional information, refer to Section  211-04 Steering Column.

  1. Disconnect the air bag sliding contact electrical connectors.

  1. Using a suitable screwdriver, detach the air bag sliding contact electrical connectors from the steering column.

  1. Detach the air bag sliding contact from the steering column.
    • Using a suitable screwdriver, release the locking tangs from the steering column.

  1. Remove the air bag sliding contact.
    • Feed the electrical connectors through the steering column aperture.

Installation

WARNING:
WARNING:Never probe the electrical connectors of air bag modules or any other supplemental restraint system component. Failure to follow this instruction may result in personal injury.
CAUTION:
CAUTION:The air bag sliding contact centralizing procedure must be carried out before installing the air bag sliding contact.

  1. Centralize the air bag sliding contact.
    1. Turn the inner rotor fully counterclockwise until a resistance is felt (approximately two and three quarter turns from the central position).
    1. Turn the inner rotor clockwise approximately two and three quarter turns until the alignment markings are aligned and the locking tab locates into the slot.

  1. Install the air bag sliding contact.
    • Feed the electrical connectors through the steering column aperture.
    • Make sure the retaining tangs lock into position on the steering column.

  1. Attach the air bag sliding contact electrical connectors to the steering column.

  1. Connect the air bag sliding contact electrical connectors.
  1. Install the steering wheel. For additional information, refer to Section  211-04 Steering Column.

  1. Install the steering column lower shroud.

  1. Install the steering column upper shroud.
