Audio Unit - Audio System—Vehicles Built From: 06/2003 Mondeo 2001 (10/2000-02/2007)
Description and Operation

Radio 5000C, 6000CD

A new generation of audio units is available for the Mondeo as of model year 2003.75. The main difference between these new units with the designation 5000C and 6000CD and the previously installed 5000/6000 units is in their design.

All models now also have an additional connection in the glove compartment which can be used to connect a further external audio device.

This connection is also used to connect the speakers of the vehicle's main audio unit for playback.

shown: 5000C

The 5000C/6000CD is characterised by the following special features:

  • larger LCD display
  • full electronic controls for the cassette player (5000C)
  • 10 % increase in output power (4x17 Watt)
  • additional stereo audio connection
  • pre-installation setup for telephone voice activation system (from 2004.50)
  • speed-dependent volume adjustment via the CAN bus

The 6000CD has a modified CD player in place of the cassette player, which allows better playback of CD-Rs.

Service Instructions

The keycode is entered using the MENU button and the arrow buttons. The keycode is then confirmed with the rotary/pushbutton in the middle of the unit.

Only a limited number of attempts at entering the keycode are available. The number of previous unsuccessful attempts is shown on the display.

After each unsuccessful attempt, the person entering the keycode will have to wait for an uninterrupted period of time before making the next attempt.

The display then shows "WAIT XX" and counts down to "0" provided the ignition remains switched on. Once this time has counted down a new attempt can be made to enter the keycode.

After a certain number of failed attempts at entering the keycode the display will show "LOCKED" or "SAFE". Once this has happened the customer will not be able to get the audio unit to work.

However, authorised Ford dealers can disable this lock and have three further opportunities to enter the keycode.

VID input

It is often extremely difficult to return stolen audio units which have been seized by the police to their owners.

Therefore many Ford audio units offer the option of, for example, entering a vehicle identification number into the unit.

Ford audio systems use the letter combination "VID" as the abbreviation for the vehicle identification number. In addition to the actual Vehicle Identification Number (VIN), it is for example also possible to enter the registration number of the vehicle for additional security.

If a security number is stored then it is shown on the display of modern Ford audio units after the power supply is connected.

Sony CD, Sony 6CD

The Sony CD and Sony 6CD units are a completely new generation of audio units. In addition to a unique design, they also offer an expanded range of functions.

Sony 6CD

The Sony CD is characterised by the following special features:

  • new design
  • 4x20 W output power
  • 2-way speakers
  • MP3-capable CD player
  • Digital signal processing (DSP)
  • Telephone connection
  • optional connection for Rear Car Entertainment System
  • additional stereo audio connection
  • Fittings for voice control
  • speed-dependent volume adjustment via the CAN bus

In addition to the above functions, the Sony 6CD also has an integrated 6-CD changer. On the Sony CD with a single CD player, the LOAD button (to the right of the CD drawer) carries the inscription "CD-INFO". Otherwise there are no external differences between the Sony CD and the Sony 6CD.

MP3 player

The abbreviation MP3 stands for "MPEG 1 Audio Layer 3". The MP3 format enables near-CD-quality audio files to be created with a compression of approximately 10:1.

MP3 files can be identified by the file extension ".mp3". In contrast to standard audio file formats, MP3 files are significantly more compact, allowing for example more tracks to be stored on a single CD.

An MP3-capable device is required to play MP3 files. The Sony units offer such capability. When creating MP3 CDs, make sure that the recording process ("burning") adheres to the ISO standard 9660.

For further information refer to the Audio Guide.

Service Instructions

The keys 1 - 4 are used to enter the keycode. Key 5 is used to confirm the keycode.

After a certain number of failed attempts at entering the keycode the display will show "LOCKED" or "SAFE". Once this has happened the customer will not be able to get the audio unit to work. Authorised Ford dealers cannot disable this lock. In such cases the affected unit should be sent back to the manufacturer.

Special Tool Kit GV3301 should be used for removal of the unit.

VID input

It is possible to enter a vehicle identification number into the device.

An Audio Rear Seat Entertainment System is available for the rear seats. In addition to two headphone sockets, this also includes buttons for station search, volume adjustment, radio/MP3/CD/CD-changer operation.

The system provides the option of using two pairs of headphones for playback instead of the rear speakers. The rear speakers are automatically muted when headphones are plugged into the headphone sockets.

The system can be switched on or off independently of the status of the vehicle's main audio system. There is also the option of running the unit for a duration of 1 hour when the ignition is switched off (1-hour mode).

It is for example possible to listen to the radio via the Rear Seat Entertainment System whilst the vehicle's main audio unit is playing a CD. It is also possible to select different frequency bands or radio station frequencies.

The system uses the receiver of the front (main) audio unit to do this.

If the front (main) audio unit is being used for listening to the radio, then the buttons of the rear unit can be used to operate the CD player or, if equipped, a CD-changer or any other external device which is connected to the system.

When the device is operated in CD mode it is not possible to receive traffic bulletins/announcements (TAs) through the headphones.

The LCD display provides additional information about the operation of the radio or the audio devices.

This system is optionally available in conjunction with the Sony CD, Sony 6CD and Ford DVD navigation system with touchscreen.

Service Instructions

As soon as the rear device is connected to the radio, a corresponding option appears on the MENU. This menu option can be used to operate the system from the vehicle's main audio unit.

If a fault is detected in the system then a corresponding trouble code is stored in the memory of the audio unit. This trouble code can then be read out with WDS.
