Diagnosis and Testing

Inspection and Verification

  1. Verify the customer concern.
  1. Visually inspect for obvious signs of mechanical or electrical damage.

  • Accelerator cable
  • Throttle body
  • Fuse(s)
  • Relay(s)
  • Wiring harness
  • Electrical connector(s)
  • Throttle position (TP) sensor
  • Powertrain control module (PCM)
  1. If an obvious cause for an observed or reported concern is found, correct the cause (if possible) before proceeding to the next step.
  1. If the cause is not visually evident, verify the symptom and refer to Symptom Chart.

Accelerator pedal is hard to depress or has a rough/raspy or sticky feel
*
Damaged accelerator cable.
*
INSPECT the accelerator cable for signs of damage, kinks and incorrect routing. INSTALL new as necessary. TEST the system for normal operation.
*
Accelerator cable incorrectly installed.
*
CHECK the accelerator cable for correct installation and adjustment.
REFER to: Accelerator Cable Adjustment (310-02 Acceleration Control, General Procedures).
*
Damaged accelerator pedal.
*
Accelerator pedal obstruction.
*
CHECK the accelerator pedal for signs of damage or obstruction. INSTALL new as necessary or free from obstruction. TEST the system for normal operation.
*
Worn or damaged throttle body.
*
INSTALL a new throttle body.
REFER to: Throttle Body (303-04 Fuel Charging and Controls, Removal and Installation).
TEST the system for normal operation.
Accelerator pedal does not return freely
*
Damaged accelerator cable.
*
INSPECT the accelerator cable for signs of damage, kinks and incorrect routing. INSTALL new as necessary. TEST the system for normal operation.

Accelerator cable incorrectly installed.
*
CHECK the accelerator cable for correct installation and adjustment.
REFER to: Accelerator Cable Adjustment (310-02 Acceleration Control, General Procedures).

Damaged accelerator pedal.
*
Accelerator pedal obstruction.
*
CHECK the accelerator pedal for signs of damage or obstruction. INSTALL new as necessary or free from obstruction. TEST the system for normal operation.

Weak or broken throttle body return spring.
*
INSTALL a new throttle body.

TEST the system for normal operation.

Worn or damaged throttle body.
*
INSTALL a new throttle body.
REFER to: Throttle Body (303-04 Fuel Charging and Controls, Removal and Installation).
TEST the system for normal operation.
High engine idle speed

Damaged accelerator cable.
*
INSPECT the accelerator cable for signs of damage, kinks and incorrect routing. INSTALL new as necessary. TEST the system for normal operation.

Accelerator cable incorrectly installed.

Poor idling
