23‐036 Hand vacuum pump

13‐016 Adaptor, bleeding power steering

NOTE:

When filling or topping up the reservoir, care should be taken to ensure that the fluid is clean and not agitated prior to use. The fluid must be poured slowly into the reservoir to minimise the possibility of aeration.

1. Top up the reservoir to the `max cold' mark.

NOTE:

Ensure that the fluid in the reservoir does not fall below the minimum mark. On no account must the fluid level be allowed to drop sufficient for air to enter the system.

2. Start the engine and slowly turn the steering wheel from lock to lock.
3. Check the system for leaks.
Examine the hose connections, steering rack gaiters and valve body for external leaks.
4. Switch off the engine and recheck the fluid level; top up if necessary.

5. Fit the bung adaptor to the hand vacuum pump and fit the adaptor to the reservoir filler neck.
6. Bleed the system.
1. Start the engine and slowly rotate the steering wheel to the right, just off the stop.

NOTE:

The pressure will fall off so keep adequate pressure maintained using the vacuum pump.

2. Turn the engine off and apply 51 kPa (0,51 bar) (15 inHg) of vacuum pressure, using the vacuum pump, until the air is purged from the system (minimum of 5 minutes).
3. Depressurise the system at the vacuum pump.
4. Repeat the bleed operation rotating the steering wheel to the left, just off the stop.
7. Remove the hand vacuum pump and adaptor and top up the fluid level if necessary.
8. Start the engine and rotate the steering wheel from lock to lock. If excessive noise is apparent repeat the bleed procedure.
9. If the noise level is still unacceptable, leave vehicle standing overnight and repeat the bleed procedure the next day.
