Removal

All vehicles
WARNING:
WARNING:Do not smoke or carry lighted tobacco or open flame of any type when working on or near any fuel related components. Highly flammable vapors are always present and may ignite. Failure to follow these instructions may result in personal injury.
  1. Disconnect the battery ground cable.
    For additional information, refer to: Battery Disconnect and Connect (414-01 Battery, Mounting and Cables, General Procedures).

  1. NOTE:
    NOTE:Use an Allen key to prevent the piston rod from rotating.
    Loosen the strut and spring assembly top mount nut by five turns on both sides.
  1. Remove the air cleaner housing.
    For additional information, refer to: Air Cleaner (303-12 Intake Air Distribution and Filtering, Removal and Installation).
  1. Drain the cooling system.
    For additional information, refer to: Cooling System Draining, Filling and Bleeding (303-03 Engine Cooling - 1.3L Duratec-8V (Rocam)/1.6L Duratec-8V (Rocam), General Procedures).

  1. Remove the accelerator cable.
    1. Remove the clip and pull the cable from the bracket.
    1. Unhook the inner cable.

  1. Disconnect the brake booster vacuum line from the intake manifold.

  1. Remove the brake booster vacuum line.

  1. CAUTION:
    CAUTION:Protect the generator with a lint free cloth to prevent ingress of power steering fluid.
    Using the special tool, disconnect the power steering hose from the power steering pump.
    • Allow the fluid to drain into a suitable container.

  1. Disconnect the engine wiring harness.

  1. Disconnect the engine coolant temperature (ECT) sensor electrical connector.

  1. Disconnect the ignition coil electrical connector.

  1. Disconnect the heated oxygen sensor (HO2S) electrical connector.

  1. Disconnect the camshaft position (CMP) sensor electrical connector.

  1. Disconnect the evaporative emission (EVAP) vacuum line.
    • Detach the EVAP vacuum line from the valve cover.

  1. Disconnect the fuel supply line and fuel return line quick release couplings.
    For additional information, refer to: Quick Release Coupling (310-00, General Procedures).
    • Detach the fuel supply line and fuel return line from the valve cover.

  1. Remove the transaxle upper flange bolts.
    • Detach the ground cable from the transaxle.

  1. Using the special tool, disconnect the coolant hoses from the coolant flow control housing.

  1. Disconnect the vehicle speed sensor (VSS) electrical connector.

  1. CAUTION:
    CAUTION:If brake fluid is spilt on the paintwork, the affected area must be immediately washed down with cold water.
    CAUTION:
    CAUTION:Cap the clutch slave cylinder supply line to prevent fluid loss or dirt ingress.
    Disconnect the clutch slave cylinder supply line from the clutch slave cylinder.

  1. Disconnect the transaxle breather hose.
Vehicles with air conditioning
  1. Remove the accessory drive belt.
    For additional information, refer to: Accessory Drive Belt (303-05, Removal and Installation).
All vehicles
  1. Raise and support the vehicle.
    For additional information, refer to: Lifting (100-02, Description and Operation).

  1. Remove the accessory drive belt cover.
Vehicles with air conditioning

  1. Detach the air conditioning (A/C) compressor from the oil pan and secure it to the radiator crossmember.
All Vehicles

  1. Remove the front crossmember (if equipped).

  1. Remove the halfshaft heat shield.

  1. Detach the shift rod and the gearshift stabilizer from the transaxle.

  1. Disconnect the catalyst monitor sensor electrical connector and detach the connector from the retaining bracket.

  1. Disconnect the reversing lamp switch electrical connector.

  1. Disconnect the power steering pressure (PSP) switch electrical connector.

  1. Detach the power steering pipe from the radiator crossmember.

  1. Disconnect the power steering line.
    • Allow the fluid to drain into a suitable container.

  1. Support the exhaust flexible pipe with a support wrap or suitable splint assembly.

  1. Disconnect the catalytic converter from the exhaust flexible pipe.
    • Discard the gasket.
    • Discard the nuts.

  1. Disconnect the lower arm from the wheel knuckle on both sides (left-hand side shown).

  1. CAUTION:
    CAUTION:Secure the halfshaft to prevent damage to the constant velocity (CV) joints. The inner CV joint must not be bent more than 18 degrees. The outer CV joint must not be bent more than 45 degrees.
    CAUTION:
    CAUTION:Do not damage the halfshaft seal.
    CAUTION:
    CAUTION:Cap the transaxle to prevent oil loss or dirt ingress.
    Using the special tool, detach the left-hand halfshaft from the transaxle and secure it to one side.
    • Allow the oil to drain into a suitable container.
    • Discard the snap ring.

  1. CAUTION:
    CAUTION:Secure the halfshaft to prevent damage to the CV joints. The inner CV joint must not be bent more than 18 degrees. The outer CV joint must not be bent more than 45 degrees.
    CAUTION:
    CAUTION:Do not damage the halfshaft seal.
    CAUTION:
    CAUTION:Cap the transaxle to prevent oil loss or dirt ingress.
    Using the special tool, detach the right-hand halfshaft from the transaxle and secure it to one side.
    • Allow the oil to drain into a suitable container.
    • Discard the snap ring.

  1. NOTE:
    NOTE:The engine right-hand mount is under tension.
    Remove the engine right-hand mount center bolt.

  1. Disconnect the generator electrical connector.

  1. Disconnect the starter motor electrical connector.

  1. Remove the starter motor.

  1. Disconnect the crankshaft position (CKP) sensor electrical connector.

  1. Disconnect the oil pressure switch electrical connector.

  1. Remove the coolant return hose.
  1. Position a suitable workshop table under the engine and transaxle assembly.
  1. Lower the vehicle until the engine and transaxle assembly is supported by the workshop table.

  1. Using a suitable retaining strap, secure the engine and transaxle assembly on the workshop table.

  1. Remove the engine left-hand mount retaining nuts.
    • Discard the nuts.
Vehicles with 1.3L engine

  1. Remove the engine front mount.
    • Discard the nuts.
Vehicles with 1.6L engine

  1. Remove the engine front mount.
    • Discard the nuts.
All vehicles
  1. Raise and support the vehicle.
    For additional information, refer to: Lifting (100-02, Description and Operation).

  1. Install the engine lifting eye.

  1. Remove the halfshaft heat shield retaining bracket.

  1. Remove the transaxle right-hand flange bolts.

  1. Remove the transaxle.
