Ignition Cable: Service and Repair
Removal
When removing ignition wires from spark plug, grasp and twist the ignition wire spark plug boot back and forth on the spark plug insulator to free the
boot. Use a twisting and pulling motion to pull the boot from the spark plug. Do not pull on the ignition wires directly, the wire may become separated
from the connector inside the boot. When removing ignition wires from the coil, squeeze the locking tabs of the ignition wire retainer and remove
using a twisting and pulling motion. Do not pull on the ignition wire.
Installation
CAUTION: Proper installation of ignition wires is critical to vehicle operation. If one ignition wire is not properly installed on spark plug or ignition
coil, both spark plugs connected to that ignition coil may not fire under load.
Editor Note: Although the factory procedure does not mention any components required to be removed prior to the Ignition Cables, please note that
the exploded view showing the cable routing does have the intake removed. See: Diagrams
1. Whenever an ignition wire is removed from a spark plug, ignition coil, or a new ignition wire is installed, Silicone Dielectric Compound must be
applied to the boot prior to installation. Using a small clean tool, coat the entire interior surface of the boot with Silicone Dielectric Compound or
equivalent.
2. Install each ignition wire on the proper ignition coil terminal. The engine cylinder numbers are identified on the ignition coil. Ensure that the
ignition wire boots are fully seated and that both ignition coil boot retainers locking tabs have engaged.
3. Route the new ignition wire(s) on the engine in the same relative position as the old ignition wire(s). Then install the ignition wires in the ignition
wire separator on the engine.
4. Connect ignition wires to proper spark plugs.
