Steering Gear: Service and Repair
Flushing

NOTE:

Always flush steering gear when replacing the power steering pump due to fluid contamination.

The CIII power steering pump has a filter built into the power steering pump reservoir. Check for contamination and clean or replace the reservoir
assembly as required.

PROCEDURE

1. Remove the power steering pump and power steering pump pulley and service the pump.

NOTE:  Flush the pressure line before installing. Connect only the pressure hose.

2. Install the power steering pump pulley on the power steering pump. Install the power steering pump.
3. Place the fluid return line from the gear in a container and plug the fluid return line fitting.
4. Fill power steering pump reservoir with Power Steering Fluid Motorcraft MERCON ATF.
5. Disconnect ignition coil wire and raise front wheels off floor.
6. While adding approximately 1.9 liters (0.5 gallon) of fluid, turn ignition switch to START position (using the ignition key) and crank engine with

starter motor while turning steering wheel from lock-to-lock.

7. When all fluid has been added, turn ignition switch to OFF position and connect ignition coil wire.
8. Remove plug from the power steering pump reservoir return hose nipple. Attach power steering return hose to nipple. Reposition constant tension

clamp behind bump in nipple.

9. Check fluid level. Add fluid if necessary.

NOTE:  Do not overfill power steering pump reservoir.

10. Lower vehicle.
11. Start engine and turn steering wheel slowly from lock-to-lock several times. Check fluid level and adjust as required.
