Description
Double hexagon 2 1/4" socket, GV1509
Remove

1. Release the wheel nuts and mark the position of the wheel rims in relation to the wheel hubs.

CAUTION:

Never raise a laden vehicle with a jack under the rear axle housing.

2. Raise the vehicle.
3. Detach the wheels.
4. Mark the position of the brake drums in relation to the wheel hubs and remove them.

CAUTION:

Remove the shafts carefully so as not to damage the oil seals in the axle housing.

5. Remove the half shafts.

6. Remove the ball bearing spacer ring from the wheel hubs.

NOTE:

The left‐hand nut has a left‐hand thread and is marked with a groove around the double hexagon.

7. Unscrew the self‐locking hub nuts.
• Use a proprietary double hexagon 2 1/4" socket, GV1509.
• The hub nuts may only be used once.

CAUTION:

If an ABS sensor ring is fitted, be careful not to damage it.

8. Remove the wheel hubs.

9. Detach the brake pipes and hoses.
• Front/rear split ‐ one hose
• Diagonal split ‐ two hoses
1. Unscrew the brake pipes and seal them.
2. Remove the steel clips.
3. Pull the brake hoses out of the bracket and seal them.

10. If necessary, disconnect the ABS sensor wiring at the chassis side member.

11. Unhook the LAV control spring.
1. Raise the rear axle with a jack until the LAV control spring is relaxed.
2. Remove the control spring from the LAV lever.
   Remove the spring clip and the clevis pin.
3. If necessary, remove the retainer on the rear axle bracket and lower the jack.

12. Unscrew the brake pipe and seal it.

13. Detach the brake assembly.
1. Four nuts
2. Oil deflecting plate
   Tie the brake assembly up to one side.

14. Detach the driveshaft.
1. Mark the position of the driveshaft flange in relation to the rear axle.
2. Four bolts.
   Tie the driveshaft up to one side.

15. Detach the shock absorber on both sides.
16. Detach the spring U‐bolts.
• Support the rear axle with a jack.
• Unscrew the four self‐locking nuts on each side.
• Detach the spring U‐bolts and the guide plates.
17. Lower the rear axle and remove it.
Install
18. General note:
   Renew all self‐locking nuts and spring washers when installing.

19. Locate the rear axle in position and fit it.
1. Raise the axle and insert the spring guides in the guide bores.
2. Fit the guide plates.
3. Insert the spring U‐bolts.

20. Fit the spring U‐bolts and the shock absorbers.

2. Self‐locking nuts

21. Fit the driveshaft.
1. Align the marks on the two flanges.
2. Four new bolts

22. Fit the brake hoses.
• Front/rear split - one hose
• Diagonal split ‐ two hoses
• Remove the plugs from the brake pipes and hoses.
1. Guide the brake hoses through the brackets and secure them with clips.
2. Screw the brake pipes on to the hoses and secure them.

23. If necessary, connect the ABS sensor wiring at the chassis side member.

24. Attach the LAV control spring.
1. Raise the rear axle and secure the control spring to the LAV lever with a clevis spring and a spring clip.
2. If necessary, insert the control spring in the rear axle bracket and secure it with a spring clip.
   Lower the jack.

NOTE:

The drain slot in the backplate and the drain hole in the axle flange must not be blocked.

25. Apply sealer to the surface of the oil deflecting plate on the backplate.
26. Fit the backplate and bolt it on with the oil deflecting plate.

27. Attach the brake pipe.
   Remove the plugs from the brake pipes.

CAUTION:

If an ABS sensor ring is fitted, be careful not to damage it.

28. Fit the wheel hubs.
   Grease the wheel hub oil seal slightly.

NOTE:

The left‐hand hub nut has a left‐hand thread and is marked with a groove around the double hexagon.

29. Insert new self‐locking hub nuts and tighten them.
   Use a proprietary double hexagon 2 1/4" socket, GV1509.

NOTE:

Insert the spacer ring with the chamfered side facing inwards.

30. Insert the ball bearing spacer ring in the wheel hub.

CAUTION:

Fit the shafts carefully so as not to damage the oil seals in the axle housing.

31. Fit the half shafts.
   Grease the O‐seal rings slightly.

32. Fit the brake drums.
• Align the marks.

33. Bleed the rear brake circuit as described in Operation No. 12 141 0.
   Apply the handbrake.
34. Install the wheel, refer to specifications for the wheel nut torque.
• Align the marks.
35. Lower the vehicle.

NOTE:

Check the rear axle oil level only when the vehicle is standing on a level surface.

36. Check the oil level.
37. Do up the oil check/filler plug tightly.
38. Check the LAV ”X" dimension as described in Operation No. 12 136 0, and adjust it as necessary.
