Removal

  1. Release the parking brake.
  1. Remove the wheel and tire.
    For additional information, refer to: Wheel and Tire (204-04 Wheels and Tires, Removal and Installation).

  1. Release the brake shoes (brake drum shown removed for clarity).
    1. Remove the grommet from the brake backing plate.
    1. Using a thin bladed screwdriver, depress the brake shoe adjuster lever.
    1. Using a thin bladed screwdriver, rotate the brake shoe adjuster screw.
    1. Install the grommet.

  1. Remove the brake drum.
    • Remove and discard the brake drum retainer (if equipped).

  1. Loosen the wheel bearing and wheel hub.
    • Remove the wheel bearing and wheel hub retaining nut and washer.
  1. WARNING:
    WARNING:Secure the special tool with the retaining cable. Failure to follow this instruction may result in personal injury.
    Using the special tool, remove the wheel bearing and wheel hub.

  1. Remove the special tool.

  1. NOTE:
    NOTE:The following step is only required for vehicles with a wheel spindle diameter of 37 mm.
    Using the special tool, remove the rear wheel bearing inner race from the wheel spindle.

  1. NOTE:
    NOTE:The following step is only required for vehicles with a wheel spindle diameter of 45 mm.
    Using the special tool, remove the rear wheel bearing inner race from the wheel spindle.
  1. Remove the special tool.

Installation

  1. WARNING:
    WARNING:Install a new wheel hub retaining nut. Failure to follow this instruction may result in personal injury.
    NOTE:
    NOTE:Vehicles are equipped with a wheel hub retaining nut with a flange diameter of either 44 mm or 51 mm.
    Measure the wheel hub retaining nut flange diameter to aid installation.
  1. CAUTION:
    CAUTION:On vehicles equipped with a 44 mm flange diameter wheel hub retaining nut, make sure that the wheel hub retaining nut washer is installed with the flat face towards the wheel bearing.
    Install the wheel hub.
    • Tighten the wheel hub retaining nut in 5 stages:
      • 1. Stage 1: Rotate the wheel hub 5 times.

        2. Stage 2: Rotate the wheel hub in the opposite direction while tightening the wheel hub retaining nut to 200 Nm.

        3. Stage 3: Rotate the wheel hub 5 times.

        4. Stage 4: Rotate the wheel hub in the opposite direction while tightening the wheel hub retaining nut to the specified torque. For additional information, refer to: Specifications (204-02 Rear Suspension, Specifications).

        5. Stage 5: Rotate the wheel hub 5 times.

  1. Install the brake drum.
    • Install and the brake drum retainer (if equipped).
  1. Install the wheel and tire.
    For additional information, refer to: Wheel and Tire (204-04 Wheels and Tires, Removal and Installation).
  1. Depress the brake pedal to adjust the brake shoes.
