NOTE:The conical nut of the special has a left-hand thread. Assemble the special tool with the old drive pinion shim and the drive pinion rear bearing cone. | | -
Assemble the special tools with the drive pinion front bearing cone. | | -
Using the special tools, preload the drive pinion bearings. - If installing used bearings, turn the preload sleeve clockwise to the first index mark.
- If installing new bearings, turn the preload sleeve clockwise to the second index mark.
- Turn the handle of the master pinion gauge several times to set the bearings.
| | -
CAUTION:The determined drive pinion bearing turning torque must be maintained when installing the drive pinion to the axle housing and adjusting the ring gear backlash. Using the special tool, determine the drive pinion bearing turning torque. - Turn the special tool smoothly and note the value.
| | -
CAUTION:The differential bearing caps are marked to the axle housing. Install them in their original position. NOTE:The adjusting nuts must be tight against the differential bearing cups. Install the special tool together with the differential bearings and the adjusting nuts. - Tighten the bolts in three stages:
- Stage1: Tighten the bolts to 88 Nm.
- Stage2: Loosen the bolts.
- Stage3: Tighten the bolts to 20 Nm.
| | -
NOTE:Make sure the special tool can still turned by hand. Using a suitable drift, tighten the adjusting nut of the special tool. | | -
NOTE:The dial indicator gauge plunger must be on the center line of the special tool (as shown). | | -
CAUTION:When half of the total deflection is shown on the dial indicator gauge, do not turn the special tool further. NOTE:The dial indicator gauge plunger must be on the center line of the special tool (as shown). | | -
NOTE:The dial indicator gauge plunger must be on the outer edge of the special tool closest to the drive pinion adjustment gauge (as shown). | | -
CAUTION:When half of the total deflection is shown on the dial indicator gauge, do not turn the special tool further. NOTE:The dial indicator gauge plunger must be on the outer edge of the special tool closest to the drive pinion adjustment gauge (as shown). | | -
NOTE:Verify the measurement three times. NOTE:The dial indicator gauge plunger must be on the center line of the special tool (as shown). | | -
Calculate the required drive pinion shim thickness. - If the measurement is positive, the dial indicator gauge reading must be added to the old shim thickness.
| | -
Calculate the required drive pinion shim thickness. - If the measurement is negative, the dial indicator gauge reading must be substracted from the old shim thickness.
| | -
Remove the special tool (master pinion gauge) from the axle housing and disassemble it. | | -
NOTE:The conical nut of the special tool has a left-hand thread. Assemble the special tool with the new drive pinion shim and the drive pinion rear bearing cone. | | -
Determine the total deflection of the special tool, refer to previous steps. | | -
NOTE:The dial indicator gauge reading should be "0" ± 0.01 mm. If the reading is not within this tolerance, repeat the previous steps until the correct shim is selected. NOTE:Verify the measurement three times. NOTE:The dial indicator gauge plunger must be on the center line of the special tool (as shown). | | |
