Removal and Installation

Removal

Vehicles with VIN plate axle code: E/F/H/J/K/L/R
  1. Remove the rear wheel and tire.
    For additional information, refer to: Wheel and Tire (204-04 Wheels and Tires, Removal and Installation).

  1. NOTE:
    NOTE:Do not remove rear cover.
    NOTE:
    NOTE:Mark the position of the axle shaft in relation to the wheel hub.
    Remove the axle shaft.
    • Remove and discard the gasket.
Vehicles with VIN plate axle code: A/B/C/D/G/M/P/X/Y
  1. Remove the brake drum.
    For additional information, refer to: Brake Drum - VIN Plate Axle Code: E/F (206-02 Drum Brake, Removal and Installation).

  1. Remove the differential housing cover.
    • Discard the gasket.
    • Allow the oil to drain into a suitable container.
Vehicles with anti-lock brakes

  1. Detach the wheel speed sensor from the brake backing plate.
Vehicles with VIN plate axle code: A/B/C/D/G/M/P/X/Y

  1. Remove the differential pinion shaft.
    • Discard the retaining bolt.

  1. CAUTION:
    CAUTION:Do not damage the axle shaft O-ring seal.
    Push the axle shaft towards the center of the axle and remove the snap ring from the end of the axle shaft.
  1. CAUTION:
    CAUTION:Do not damage the axle shaft oil seal.
    Remove the axle shaft.

Installation

Vehicles with VIN plate axle code: A/B/C/D/G/M/P/X/Y
  1. Lubricate the lip of the axle shaft oil seal with grease.
  1. CAUTION:
    CAUTION:Do not damage the axle shaft O-ring seal.
    Install the axle shaft.

  1. CAUTION:
    CAUTION:Do not damage the axle shaft O-ring seal.
    Push the axle shaft towards the center of the axle and install the snap ring to the end of the axle shaft.

  1. NOTE:
    NOTE:Install a new differential pinion shaft retaining bolt.
    Install the differential pinion shaft.
Vehicles with anti-lock brakes

  1. Attach the wheel speed sensor to the brake backing plate.
Vehicles with VIN plate axle code: A/B/C/D/G/M/P/X/Y
  1. Clean the mating faces of the axle housing and differential housing cover.
  1. Coat the threads of the differential housing cover retaining bolts with thread-locking compound.

  1. NOTE:
    NOTE:Install a new differential housing cover gasket.
    Install the differential housing cover.

  1. NOTE:
    NOTE:Vehicles with VIN Plate Axle Code: A/B/Y/C/D/G/M/P/X
    With the vehicle on a level surface, fill the rear axle with SAE 75W-140 high performance rear axle oil until the oil level is 6-14 mm below the bottom of the filler hole.
  1. Install the brake drum.
    For additional information, refer to: Brake Drum - VIN Plate Axle Code: E/F (206-02 Drum Brake, Removal and Installation).
Vehicles with VIN plate axle code: E/F/H/J/K/L/R

  1. CAUTION:
    CAUTION:Install a new gasket.
    NOTE:
    NOTE:Align the mark on the axle shaft with the mark on the wheel hub.
    Install the axle shaft.

  1. Check the rear axle oil level.
  1. Install the rear wheel and tire.
