Power Steering - Steering Gear Transit 2000.5 (01/2000-05/2006)
Removal and Installation

Two leg puller

Removal

All vehicles

  1. NOTE:
    NOTE:Make sure the road wheels are in the straight ahead position.
    Centralize the steering and lock it in position.

  1. Detach the steering column lower bearing from the bulkhead.
  1. Remove the front wheels and tires. For additional information, refer to Section  204-04 Wheels and Tires.
Left-hand drive vehicles with 2.3L engine

  1. Remove the steering column flexible coupling heat shield.
All vehicles

  1. Remove the steering column flexible coupling lower pinch bolt.
    • Discard the bolt.
Vehicle built 01/2000 onwards

  1. Release the circlip.
All vehicles
  1. Disconnect the steering column flexible coupling from the steering gear pinion.

  1. CAUTION:
    CAUTION:Leave the tie-rod end retaining nuts in place to protect the ball joint studs.
    Loosen the tie-rod end retaining nuts.

  1. CAUTION:
    CAUTION:Protect the ball joint seals using a soft cloth to prevent damage.
    Using a suitable two leg puller, detach the tie-rod ends from the wheel knuckles.
    1. Release the tie-rod ends.
    1. Remove and discard the tie-rod end retaining nuts.

  1. Detach the stabilizer bar connecting links from the lower arms (if equipped).

  1. Disconnect the power steering lines from the power steering gear.
    1. Remove the bolt.
    1. Rotate the clamp plate.
    1. Detach the lines from the front axle crossmember.
    • Allow the fluid to drain into a suitable container.
    • Discard the O-ring seals.

  1. NOTE:
    NOTE:Remove the steering gear through the driver side wheel arch.
    Remove the steering gear.

Installation

All vehicles

  1. Install the steering gear.

  1. CAUTION:
    CAUTION:Make sure the power steering lines are correctly located in the valve body.
    NOTE:
    NOTE:Install new power steering line O-ring seals.
    Connect the power steering lines to the power steering gear.
    1. Rotate the clamp plate.
    1. Install the bolt.
    1. Attach the lines to the front axle crossmember.

  1. Attach the stabilizer bar connecting links to the lower arms (if equipped).

  1. WARNING:
    WARNING:Install new tie-rod end retaining nuts. Failure to follow this instruction may result in personal injury.
    Install the tie-rod ends to the wheel knuckles.
Vehicles built up to 12/1999

  1. WARNING:
    WARNING:Install a new steering column flexible coupling lower pinch bolt. Failure to follow this instruction may result in personal injury.
    NOTE:
    NOTE:Make sure the wheel hubs are in the straight ahead position.
    Connect the steering column flexible coupling to the steering gear pinion.
Vehicles built 01/2000 onwards

  1. WARNING:
    WARNING:Install a new steering column flexible coupling lower pinch bolt. Failure to follow this instruction may result in personal injury.
    NOTE:
    NOTE:Make sure the wheel hubs are in the straight ahead position.
    NOTE:
    NOTE:Make sure the circlip is correctly seated.
    Connect the steering column flexible coupling to the steering gear pinion.
Left-hand drive vehicles with 2.3L engine

  1. Install the steering column flexible coupling heat shield.
All vehicles
  1. Install the front wheels and tires. For additional information, refer to Section  204-04 Wheels and Tires.

  1. Attach the steering column lower bearing to the bulkhead.
  1. Fill and bleed the power steering system. For additional information, refer to Section  211-00 Steering System - General Information.
  1. Adjust the front wheel alignment. For additional information, refer to Section  204-00 Suspension System - General Information.
