Steering Column - Steering Column Transit 2000.5 (01/2000-05/2006)
Removal and Installation

Removal

All vehicles

  1. NOTE:
    NOTE:Make sure the road wheels are in the straight ahead position.
    Centralize the steering and lock it in position.
Vehicles with driver air bag
  1. Remove the driver air bag module. For additional information, refer to Section  501-20A Safety Belt System / 501-20B Supplemental Restraint System.
Vehicles without driver air bag
  1. Disconnect the battery ground cable. For additional information, refer to Section  414-01 Battery, Mounting and Cables.
All vehicles

  1. Detach the steering column lower bearing from the bulk head.
  1. Raise and support the vehicle. For additional information, refer to Section  100-02 Jacking and Lifting.

  1. Remove the steering column flexible coupling upper pinch bolt.
  1. Lower the vehicle.

  1. Remove the steering column upper shroud.
    1. Using a thin bladed screwdriver, release the two clips (one each side).
    1. Remove the shroud.

  1. Remove the steering column lower shroud.
Vehicles with driver air bag

  1. Disconnect the air bag sliding contact electrical connectors.
    • Using a thin bladed screwdriver, release the locking tangs.
All vehicles

  1. Disconnect the passive anti-theft system (PATS) transceiver, windshield wiper/washer switch and horn switch electrical connectors.

  1. Disconnect the ignition switch and turn signal switch electrical connectors.

  1. Detach the data link connector (DLC) from the steering column.

  1. Remove the steering column.
    • Discard the retaining nuts.

Installation

WARNING:
WARNING:Install new steering column locknuts. Failure to follow this instruction may result in personal injury.
WARNING:
WARNING:Install a new steering column flexible coupling upper pinch bolt. Failure to follow this instruction may result in personal injury.

  1. To install, reverse the removal procedure.
